Are there any online sources I can use to check a serial number on a Model 1917 S&W (in particular a five digit that starts with 66,xxx)? Thanks again for all the help, guys!

Rough guestimation of DOB would be right at late spring to early summer of 1918. 42,xxx is reported to be from April 1918 according to SCSW #3.
There used to be a 'Springfield Research Service' where some (a very few?) could be found by serial # in the US Government records. I Don't think that service is up and running any more.

Hi John, If you go to armscollectors.com and scroll down until the left hand of the page shows "Manufacture Dates", you can check the YEAR of manufacture for several different firearms. I guess indepth info would have to come from a factory letter (there is a form available online). Hope this helps. Ray
