17-4?
Looking at a 17-4 and the seller claims it is a 1948 vintage .22 lr.
I haven't physically held the gun but from the poor pictures I can only count 3 screws.
Could it be a a 1949 handgun? I don't know enough about them to make a decision.

If it is marked as a 17-4 it is not a 1948 gun. No model marked guns prior to 1958, not even model 17 no dash. If it was a 1948 gun there would be a larger diameter screw on the side plate up near top of the frame. I have a K22 that is a 4 screw (missing the big top side plate screw) and it is from 1957

I believe there should be two digits before the K and four after. If the serial number is 21K4700, it is likely to be a 1978 gun.

Made in 1982. That is consistent with a Model 17-4 (introduced, 1977).
My guess is the seller is ignoring the digits before the K. Serial number k700 would point to c. 1947.

Thanks for all of the good input. Probably buy it anyway just to add to my growing collection.

David
K prefix numbers went as high as 311Kxxx before the target K frames were switched to the three-alpha system in 1983.

The pinned barrel was dropped during the run of Model 17-4's in 1982 so if the one you are looking at has the pinned barrel it has more value to some people.
