I just lost a bid on what I think is a transition commerical model 1917 produced 1n 1946 from war surplus S&W parts. On page 164 of the SCOSW 3rd ed it mentions this model, however there is not a good photo of one. Also it does not mention anything about the 4 line Marcus Registradas stamping. Does anyone have one in their collection and would be willing to post some photos of this rare gun? It did not have an "S" prefix serial number and no US Property markings. I need to know as to what level of grief and saddness I should experience over my loss.

1946 is too early for the 'Marcus Registradas'. This didn't start until around 1950 iir.

Also, in 1946, they all should have had an 'S' prefix, as they should all have left the factory with the safety mod.

hi
the only way you can tell is by serial number
they was 981 made from 1946 to 1950 and some had the S- prefex and some did not.\
i have one that letters to 1946 and it does not have the S- prefex.my serial number is 2099xx
the serial number range is 209792 to 210782
and they can have or not have the S- prefex.
a 98 % condition gun will bring $2000.00
with serial numbered grips. should have post war Magnas with the high horn style.

Where did you see it?
Jim nailed it while I was hunting this thread that has pics of them. Some have the S, and some don't, even though they ALL have the modern hammer block. If you cock the hammer slowly, you can see the block sliding DOWN.
The 4 line address was mandated in 1948, and worked into production gradually.

I was bidding on it on GB, lost the bid by $5, the serial number was 118214. It had been refinished, I presume,at the factory as it had a date stamp of 274. It had all of its military markings. The side plate had the large S&W logo plus the frame had the Marcus Reg lines. No S prefix. Grips were military and not numbered to the gun.

I quite bidding at the $500 level because I did not have a clue about this model. I thank you guys for the photos and the info, don't feel so bad about losing. Lee thanks for the photos.

NOT the post-war model. They will NOT have the military markings, and the serial number is too low.

Here is a few pictures of mine. This is how I recieved it from the online Auction. It now has Ivory. There is no S prefix on it and it shipped in May or June of 1946.

Thanks Dan and Steve, the gun that I was bidding on was probably one of those that was stamped by the factory when it was sent in for repairs. It looked nice but it was not what I thought it was. This forum has a great wealth of knowledge. Thanks to all who have responded. I feel a lot better about this!

What would be the differences between these, and the Brazilian ordered 1917's that were made in 1946? I have one shipped in Apr. 46, that is a round top and has the one line address. S/N 1707xx. Has the small S&W logo on the latch side, and the Brazilian crest on the side plate, with the date 1937 in the crest. I understand they were made with left over 1917 parts from WW1, and not the same as the commercial 1917 of 1946.

Differences:
No Brazilian Crest
FLAT top frame
Shipped with post-war Transition Magnas
Have the safety hammer block (modern SLIDING type)
Post-war satin finish, which is SLIGHTLY different from the military WW I type finish
They appear with and without S prefix
