There seems to be a bit more historical knowledge. It is not a revolver with in the date stated in the forum title. But there seems to be some confusion on the other side. A mod 17-3, 22lr, according to Fjestad, or a Mod 17, that is, the only one in the book. Except for the dart gun. SN#K8128xx, when is the date of mfg. I say in the mid 80's possibly in the 90's. Any help, or correct date? If I am wrong so be it. I will go back and state so. Then I will know for my grey matter.

Thank you Dan M. I was confused because the S.P.Fjestad, Blue Book, does not list but 2 mod 17's. My book is one behind the most current but that should not matter. All it list is a Mod 17 K-22 Masterpiece. I quote from book. 22LR cal.blue only,6 shot 4(mfg 1986-93),6(current mfg), or 83/8 (disc.1992) in. barrel. Disc.1993, reintroduced 1996, disc. 1998. I guess there are other Mod 17's that Blue Book does not mention. I don't know. Normally the S.P.Fjestad is pretty reliable.

My experience has been when it comes to S&W, the Blue Book is all over the map. I rarely pick up my 3 year old copy. I would recommend you find a copy of the 3rd edition. it is the best reference book I own. period

That seems to be the most accurate advice regarding S&W I have had in awhile. Thanks for your help. Now I gotta find one.

I agree with Dan. Any collector that relies on Fjested 's Blue Book for S&W info. is going to be in trouble eventually and always confused until then. It's a loser for the money it cost.

Try Amazon or Barnes and Noble. That's where I buy the S&W catalogue. Roy Jinks used to be the author, I don't know who the current author is.

The STANDARD CATALOG OF SMITH & WESSON, all three editions, are the work of Richard Nahas and Jim Supica.

Roy Jinks has written a lot, but these books aren't his.

The Blue Book is LAUGHABLE on the vintage S&W's. Universally too high or too low, and either lacks info or shows disinformation. People are always quoting data from there that amazes me in its incorrectness.
FORGET the thing for S&W's.

AMEN BROTHER! You might better set your book buyin' money on fire. The Blue Book has never been useful or remotely accurate for my purposes.

Frankly, the only thing the Fjestad Book is any good for is for showing Sellers that their gun isn't worth anywhere near what they thing it might be! I've only got a very small Collection of S&Ws and yet at least more than a half dozen of them aren't even mentioned! They work pretty hard at adding all the new "Toy Makers" such as Hi-Point but even then their prices aren't even close. I don't know how many staff members they have but they certainly don't enough to keep up with actual sales because I'd guess they're all pretty busy correcting mistakes in prior editions - spelling mistake and NOT pricing errors.

Thanks guys. Yea it is something I use for a quick check, and then I go and seek out more info. I have been cautious, for awhile, when quoting info from it. Belive you me I will be buying all 3 editions of the std S&W catalog. I won't be buying the latest edition of the Mostly wrong Blue Book. Thanks for the help.

Cartouche,

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has been issued 3 times. each time it has been revised and upgraded for additional Information. I dont think it's needed to buy all 3 editions unless you want the Collectability of the books themselves. The 3rd edition is the latest and greatest and all you really need.

It really is laughable how useless the Blue Book is, yet I tote one around the country on the odd chance I can look up a Winchester serial number, or get a LITTLE data on some brand my knowledge is light on. Mine is the 25th ed.- what ed. are they on now? Mine probably has 100,000 miles on it.
I have probably only bought 4 or 5 new ones in a 44 year span of gun trading!

DanM, M is for, you the man, second good advice I have had from you. That is great that it is updated, or added to. Heck I would have gotten all three, now I only need to get the one. I guess collecting all three would be ok, but no need to now. Thanks Dan tha MAN! Gotta luv this place. Good folks and good sound advice.
