I just picked up one of these today with a 6" bbl and Square butt. I immediately looked it up in SCS&W 3 rd edition when I got it home and was shocked to read that the square butt version is considered scarce and actually doubles the value, according to the book.

Is this info correct? I thought these normally came with Sq. butt?? Is the book off or is my thinking off on this? Also according to the book it should have the "Made in U.S.A" stamp on the right side of the frame. Mine doesn't have that marking. It's only marking (on the frame exterior) is a small S&W logo on the left of the frame.

How scare is this gun? BTW the serial number would date it to around 1919 or 1920. Condition is excellent+.

NKJ,

I believe that was one of the well known typo's in The Book. Time frame sounds close, believe it was shortly after the Big One that they started stamping the single line Made in USA, probably 1920 or so.

MKT is correct. That is a documented typo in the book. So the square butt does not increase value. But, if in excellent plus condition as stated, that does. Not a lot of 99% 90 year old guns out there. How about some pics.

I thought that was a typo about the sq. butt.

I do not have any pics yet. I have only owned the gun for a few hours.

I wish there were a good source for some of these 'running' changes. I have an M&P af that vintage in about 70% finish and excellent mechanical condition. I also have one from about 1927. The obvious changes are that the newer one has Made in the USA on the right side of the frame, a small trade mark on the left side and the sights are different. It would be nice if there were a reference to when these changes were ordered and earliest known serial numbers etc. BTW the 1927 is a RB--Mod. 1902??

I will try to get a picture today. I am not a great picture taker and mine look awful if taken inside. And the weather hasn't favored taking guns out in the yard.

In other words, hold on to yer' tater and i will get some peechurs'

NKJ,

I also have a 1912 vintage M&P in .32 WCF. Mine, serial number 55606, shipped 6/12/1912 to Sears and Roebuck, Chicago, IL. For some odd reason it seems to be one of my favorite old shooters.

I love my 32 WCF too. It is a great shooter in spite of the less than optimum sights.

I also shot this new (to me) .38 today and was tickled at how well I did with it. I managed 111 out of 12 shots in a 3 inch group at 15 yards, shooting offhand from the Bullseye position using my Green Dot DEWC load.

The sights on these old revolvers aren't the greatest for a guy of my age but I can still do some decent shooting with them.
