Default Indentity help...Please

A friend showed me a S&W today and asked me to help in finding what model it is. It is an I frame (I think) round butt with diamond grips and chambered in 38 S&W and has a 1 7/8 inch barrel. The serial no on butt is 65706 and inside the frame is a no 36841 with an 8 under it. It is a 5 screw model. Any ideas?

If it is really an I-frame model, it would have to be a five-shot gun in that caliber. Then it sounds like a .38/32 Terrier, which means .38 caliber gun built on the .32 caliber frame. The Terrier is the round butt, short barrel version of the .38 Regulation Police. The serial number makes it postwar production, maybe early '50s.

If this is not a five-shooter, then it's not an I-frame and definitely not a Terrier.

Sorry I failed to mention that it is a 5 shot. The bluing is a little rough but it locks up very good. and no end shake to speak of. Thanks for your help.
