Now I Done it... *Update 9/16
With all the grip threads lately I decided to finally do something I've been meaning to for some time.
As these grips are not original, and are the least expensive and least desirable of their kind, I went ahead and chopped them.

They never looked quite proportionate to the gun. They're a mite better now. Feel free to disagree!
...and no, I still won't take these grips off this gun...

Thanks. To the best of my knowledge it should be a 1954.
The original grips are tucked away for safe keeping.

I shoot it on occasion and intend to use it as a so called BBQ gun.

Very nice, and I like the chop job. Try a search for Iggy and grip and see if his chopped grips for his model 58 come up. Way cool.

Very nice. A set of nice aged ivories will make your pre-27
a nice BBQ gun, along with a carved holster and belt.

Ivories are a bit much. I suppose a set of ivory Ropers would be the ultimate.
I've entertained purchasing a set of Ahrends maple stocks in the retro target style.
I like these, and they have the owners touch. That means something to me, at least. They are far from the best looking chunk of wood I've seen, but are quite functional.
There is a bordered, basketweave custom holster inbound. I'll be purchasing a less fancy, western style belt to go with it.
One more shot:

When I bought my 3.5" factory original nickel pre-27 last
year, it didn't have the original diamond magnas but rather
a period correct set. I found a 38/44 model of 1950 on GB
that had a set of aged ivory magnas on it. I bought the 38/44
and harvested the ivory grips. They fit pretty well. I then put
the period correct diamond magnas on the 38/44 and sold
it.
Your pre-27 is super, and if you don't go with the ivories, a
nice carved leather holster and belt from Lobo Leather plus
custom wood grips will definitely be eye candy.

Nice job on shortening the targets, but they still look a tad large to me on the 3.5" gun.
The early nickel plated revolvers came with blued sites. Not sure when they started plating the front ramp and blade, but my 1950 "357" and 1960 M27 have blued sites.

Being a bit thrifty, they were found on Numrich, listed under N frame accessories. They are listed as used but look new for under $50. It is said to be walnut though having no discernible grain. I believe some have likened these to orange pallet wood, though I think that may be a bit harsh.
The width is actually identical to the magnas, with a shape that suits me better. They look short and stocky, which suits the gun, methinks.
If I can't get along with them, it'll be on to the next.

Ivory would be nice or maybe a nice set of stags! I like me some stags. Beautiful finish on that one!

The glossyness and the orange/red hue were really bugging me...so I stripped them in acetone and oiled 'em. They're still a bit too colorful in natural light, but look nice otherwise. I think this will be as good as they get.

Rick A,
After looking at your modified grips I thought my new grips may be just up your alley. They are thinner than factory target grips and shorter like magnas, but the space behind the trigger guard is filled like what a Tyler T-grip does. Perfect for smaller hands. Made by a forum member too. Check them out.
The kid does it again!

Smooth target stocks made of rosewood or Goncalo alves and produced from 1953 to 1956 or so are a little shorter than the stocks that were made in 1957 and later. You should find a pair of these stocks and put them on your ".357" as they would really dress it up.

Yeah, you can say that. The pre-war medallions add alot and they are not mass produced.

All my nickel guns came with a darker wood color on the grips. The blues guns come with a lighter color on the wood. Ever notice this?

Rick A, I agree with you. The shortened grips are more of a match to the overall profile of the gun.
