I really hope he understands what he has there and doesn't head to the auction route before he gives it a lot of thought.
It makes an very impressive heirloom to keep in the family.

WOW !
I wondering if he keep it or sell.
On one hand it'd be nice to keep it in the family. On the other, it'd be nice if collector obtain and maintain it in it's current condition for future generations to admire it.
We'll see.

The last people you want to look at it is Cabela's staff of losers! The will probably want to sandpaper it to get all that old blue stuff off so it will nice and shiney looking! Don't waste your time, that's $10K gun easy. It's "Cheely Grade" Ed.

That is an incredibly great find, but what would you do with it if it was yours? I guess part of it would depend on your relationship with your wifes grandfather. I have to admit unless there was some strong sentimental attachment I'd be tempted to let it go. Mainly because I'd want to shoot it and would be concerned about inadvertently decreasing the value.
Most of us could name 6-12 fairly desirable firearms which that revolver would purchase.

It makes me sick
Some of you may find this hard to believe, but I had one almost identical to that. It is one of my biggest gun trade regrets ever. Paid $550 sold it for $750 probably 15 years ago. I knew I had a TL target, but at the time the Blue Book was WAY off on value

Ed, I have worked in a Cabela's gun library for two years since my retirement from the fire service. I have been involved with firearms on some level for 50 years and most of the people I work with have equal or greater experience. While I don't have your experience or knowledge I think I do a fair job and statements like the one captured above do rankle me a bit. John SWCA #1586

Not a TL
Now that I can see the pics well and have time to actually look at them, you realize that this is NOT a Triple Lock???.
At first I thought the exerpt of Roy's letter that was posted was incorrect as he called a Third Model when a TL would be a First Model.
One can tell by the end of the forward lock that protrudes from the ejector shroud. A triple lock would have a rectangular forward lock. A Third Model will have the small round pin still in use today.
Still a great gun

John , No offense intended to you, regarding my comment about Cabela's staff smarts. You're a quick study and have learned quite bit about S&Ws in the few years I have had the honor of your acquaintance. Unfortunately the other members of the various Cabela stores gun staffs I have encountered over the years do not measure up. I have sent you a private message backing up my comment and a special test question you can try on your fellow workers regarding this Model 1926 Target. Let me know their responses and I'll post the question and their answers ( and the correct answer) here for the edification of our forum members! Good Luck, Ed.

Excellent points.
One's relationship with the previous owner would surely be a consideration. If it alone was not enough to reach a conclusion, then it would probably come down to one's own interests.
I appreicate nice, older Smith&Wesson revolvers, but I do not consider myself a "collector." Thus, I would probably find it hard to justify keeping one exceptional gun when I could sell it and use the proceeds to fund the purchase of several outstanding guns. For instance, that single gun could fund a pair of very nice Registered Magnums; a Registered Magnum, a prewar .38-44 Outdoorsman, and a prewar K-22 Outdoorsman; or many other combinations of really nice guns.
Then again, my favorite model is the 3rd Model .44 HE, so an exceptional target version of that gun might very well tempt me.
Of course, the current owner/inheritee might value cars, computers, or golf clubs as much as most of us value classic firearms. I would not fault him whatever he decides to do. Well, anything short of taking it down to the local hacksaw and bumper shop chrome job shade tree gunsmith. My point being that the important thing is that such a fine gun be appreciated and cared for in the manner it deserves.

If he does sell it-I would hope the purchaser is educated about the history and scarcity of the version of this revolver-it looks absolutely pristine and makes my mouth water!
