I've heard reports there were less than 80 pinned and recessed 629s made with an 8 3/8 barrel. Is this number correct? Can anyone provide numbers for all barrel lengths manufactured for this model that were pinned and recessed?

Thanks!

629 1981

The 629 in 4"and 8 3/8 produced before the 629-1 are highly sought after.
S&W produced a boatload of Stainless N frames in this era. The 4" are found, not often but around.

No one is "blowing smoke" at me.... I own both a 4" and an 8 3/8", pinned and recessed, both new in the pres. case, pistols in this model. I do know for a fact "boatloads" of these pinned and recessed models weren't produced. I'm simply requesting a "ball park" production number from someone who may have that information.

I'm preparing to put many of my S&W firearms on the market soon and simply making some number inquiries on some of the pistols that may be unusual or have very low production runs.

From what I have seen, there seems to have been quite a few 8 3/8" guns.
My suggestion to you is to go to some of the auction sights and do a search for closed auctions on the guns you are thinking of selling. This will give you an idea of the market.

Good advice... That's exactly what I intended to do but that will come later. All I'm interested in now are valid estimates of production numbers, not value.

The suggestions that "boatloads" or "many" don't provide much more than an assumption of what those words mean to the person stating them. I guess to me "many" can mean anywhere from 3 guns to 3 million and neither of those figures would be close to other information I have gathered.

It would seem some serious collector would have researched this particular model for more specific detail. I had hoped this forum might be able to provide more accurate information on numbers but that may not be a possibility if you guys don't know...

Thanks for your help...

Take a look at Expert Commentary by DOC 44 "Prototype and Early Model 629s"

This suggestion provided exactly the information I wanted to know... DOC 44 had the answers. Thanks p0838!!!

I'm very new to this forum and obviously need to spend more time researching all it has to offer. I noticed Roy Jinks is also included on the "Expert Commentary" list and it can't get any better than that....

If any others have any suggestions or opinions i'd enjoy hearing them.... Thanks again!

TDC...It is very difficult to give an estimate of the number of Model 629s produced with the long barrel because we really don't know how many 629s in total were produced from sometime in 1981 when the 4-inch and 8 3/8-inch barreled guns were introduced until the 629-1 was introduced at some point in 1982. What we do know is the 4-inch and 8 3/8-inch 629s were made for around a year plus or minus. Currently, collectors seem to favor the 4-inch, followed by the 6-inch and then the long barreled 629.

Based on the number of guns I have seen over the years, I would guess at least a couple of thousand 4-inch and 8 3/8-inch were made.

Thanks .... I appreciate the comments and the pictures..

I plan on visiting this site often with some other questions like these... I have many NIB S&W handguns that I collected from about 1965 to 1984 or so. I'm the original purchaser of them all and they include some that may be of interest to people here.

I don't want to get into selling details now but they will include items like a full set of Mod. 66's. a 6", a 4" a 2 1/2", all pinned and recessed and a 66-0 ( all stainless sights). All these pistols are NIB with all tools and papers, as well as the original purchase locations and receipts for each. I could also include a NIB Mod. 67 with a pinned barrel and a NIB "transitional" Mod. 60 (no pinned barrel) with the package. I expect all the 66's will be sold as a package.

A Mod. 25 1955 mis-marked 1950. NIB with the Presentation case, tools, papers and a Roy Jinks letter describing the factory error from that purchasing time frame. It has the original cardboard shipping carton.

I have two Mod 29-2's, an 8 3/8" and 6 1/2", both in blue and NIB with Pres. Cases as well as two Mod. 57's, an 8 3/8" and 6" blue, pinned and recessed, all with original cardboard shipping cartons.

I have three Mod.25 125th Anniversary Commemoratives, all NIB with their original shipping cardboard. One remains in a factory sealed box and hasn't been seen by human eyes since it left the factory. (I know... I know the risks... but I thought it would be interesting to see how well it survived, opening it on its own 50th anniversary, about 17 short years away. It's a mid range serial number, #2800, so certainly no low number collector value).

These are a few of those I'm attempting to research to establish a fair price for any interested buyer. Few could be called rare, but because they are original owner, NIB S&W's I don't believe they could be called common either... I hope some appreciative collectors will be interested when the time comes....

Thanks again, everyone.... I'll be asking more questions as time goes on. I hope you'll all continue to be as generous with your time and expertise as you have with this post....

Well Pilgrim...if you have a gun shipped in 1966 ESPECIALLY a 29-2, I am an enthusiastic buyer

I lucked out on this 4" P&R 629. Serial number N8552XX.

This is the most accurate handgun I've ever owned - I love this thing.

I went to the range today, about 40 feet, freehand, 5 out of 6 shots were one ragged hole. I not really that good a shot, but this gun is damn near perfect.

My pet load is 8 grains of HS-6, 240 gr. LSWC, 775 FPS from my chrony.

As far as I'm concerned any 629 no dash is a scarce revolver, I got very lucky 2 yrs ago and came across a NIB 6" no dash. It has rapidly become my favorite 44 bar none, it is amazingly well put together and will outshoot me easily! Serial # 779xxx puts it as an early one from the production run, really need to get it lettered. My next quest S&W will be a 4" no dash 629, here's mine:

I don't have access to the original sales receipt tonight but I think I purchased the 29-2 6 1/2" a few years later than what you're looking for. I believe sometime around '68 or '69 but I'm not sure. The serial no. is N4863XX if you want to check the shipping date. It may have been a year or so later than '69 even.....

The 29-2 8 3/8 is more a possibility for your '66 date interest. It was purchased before the 6 1/2 and has a lower ser. No. of N4554XX. If you do come up with an approximate shipping dates for them I'd like to know what they are...

In any case, these guns aren't available for sale yet and it may be a few months before they are. Still trying to establish a truly fair price for them.... and from the looks of things that may take a while.

Thanks!
