My first Smif was a reblued 1917 and was used in law enforcement. I believe it was $145 and the year was 1976. I sold it to pay for the custom work on my 2nd S&W- a M27 that I had converted to .44 Special. I carried that one on duty for several years and still have it, though I had the barrel trimmed to 5" and reblued in 2005.

seems like prices really leveled off for most of the 80s and 90s.

my first S&W was a 4 inch 19-3 used for $250 in fall 1995.

my first gun was was a W. german Sig 220 with nite sights and k-kote for $705 about April 1994 (brand new) i still have both, not for sale. many more have come and a few have gone since then.

Default How much did my first S&W cost?

My first S&W was a 4" Model 10. I bought it from a retired police officer in 1966 for $35, almost two days pay before taxes. I actually used it to shoot a few woodchucks.

That revolver led me to buy a new 6" Model 14 in 1966 for $98 (a weeks pay +tax.). That was retail at that time.
It's been a long slippery slope ever since, one S&W revolver after another.

Mine was a 4" Model 19 that I purchased at Macks Sport Shop in Kodiak AK. in 1980. It cost $265.00 IIRC. I sent it to my dad when I moved to Ill. and he wanted to know why it was so loose! I told him I didn't know but I had fired 1500 rounds of Winchester Lubaloy .357's through it. That might have done it!

Model 29-3 in 1988. I think I paid around $400 for it. I should see if the old receipt is still in the box at my Dad's house.

In 1973 I was in the academy and we had to buy our own weapons. We were told it had to be a 4" barrel. I wanted a 5" M27 but the powers that be said it had to be 4". I asked about a 3-1/2" M27 and they insisted it had to be a 4" DA revolver. I owned several Ruger SAs but no DA. I bought a M28-2 at the police discount price of $97 and some odd cents. Once I graduated from the academy and pinned on a badge I found out the department didn't care if I carried a 3-1/2", 4", 5" or even 6" barrel. Kind of soured me on the M28 and I sold it the next year when I qualified with a Government Model 45 ACP. Carried one form or another of Colt 45 the rest of my LEO career.

Never lost my admiration for N-frame Smiths but never wanted another M28, preferring the more costly but appealing M27.

Default 1st S&W

My first one was a well used S&W SA .38 2nd Model given to me in 1964. No finish and all grey with grips that were worn smooth. The cost was zero, since it was a gift from my grandfather. I still have that gun he called a wall hanger. Grandad said to wire it to a covered board and hang it on the wall.
This was got me started in the collecting world. So if you were to ask how much my first one cost me, I guess you must add all since 1964.

1976 a used Model 28-2 6 inch for $150.00 it came with a homemade holster 150 rds of .357 Winchester and a set of Herters dies. I bought it because the Dept. I worked for issued what I now believe to be pre Model 10's with a six inch barrel. The one issued to me had the barrel bent. My first new handgun was a Model 39-2 for $225.00. I now regret ever selling them but they went to pay for an engagement/wedding set.
Still have the girl now thirty years later.

Merry Christmas to all.

Smile First Smith and Wesson Cost?

Hi:
Model 10 4" SB blued $48.80 in 1963 (Police Discount Cost).
Entering L.E. I had a 4" Colt Trooper .38spl (Used) that I traded a 9mm 1915 DWM Luger for. The older Officers carried S&Ws. As soon as I could save the money I purchased the Model 10 thru the Agency.
I still have my first service revolvers (Colt and S&W).

A 6" blue M19 for $150.00 in 1973 that I used for ppc. It did very well as it won top gun for a few years straight when I was working part time in private security.

Mine wasn't a revolver. It was a Model 41. I paid $110 for it in 1958 (i think) and was highly distressed when, a few months later, S&W lowered the price to $100 because the demand was so great they could go to a more economical production line.

Default Must be in the year 1980

It was (i still got it) a S&W 19-4 4 inch barrel, with the most beautyfull grained Goncalo-Alves-targetgrips.
It cost me used CHF 560.-- back then.
Sorry, but i did not found a currency-converter that got the data stored so far to the (good old) days.

My first was a 4" pre model 21 in 1976, I was not really interested in it as I was looking for more GI 1911's and knew little about Smiths. A buddy who did not have the money talked me into buying it, told me he thought it was kind of "rare". It was reblued but I don't think I did too bad at $185. Course it turned me into a big bore snob, I wouldn't touch a 38/357 till almost 20 years later.

In 1980 I was 16 and had saved up about $100 mowing yards and doing odd jobs. I saw a 19-4 Blue 6" barrel TT, TH and Goncalo Alves Target stocks in a gun shop for $219 and fell in love. My Dad made up the difference and bought me a Bianchi Holster to go with it. He got in BIG TIME trouble with my Mom for doing it- money was tight for them at that time. When she fussed at him he'd just look over at me and wink.
I still have holster, box and everything- including the original receipt. I have more valuable guns money wise but memory wise this gun is priceless to me.

My first S&W revolver is my 28-2. I ordered it from a local gunshop in 1981 or 82 and the cost was I believe $325. It has a 4" barrel and target grips. I later changed the rear sight to a white outline rear sight. I carried it many nights doing private security patrols and guarding banks and other businesses during the Christmas season many years ago.

I got my first Smith in a straight across trade for a Walther 380 in the late 70's. It's a 17-3 and was reportedly acquired from Keenan Wynn (remember him?) in a neighborhood bar horse trade. The first purchased was a 29-2 with presentation case, etc., that I bought new for something less than $300 in 1980. I still have both of them.

In 1980 I put $180 into my first S&W which was a nickle plated 4" M-19 (don't remember what - number). I gave that to my father in Ga. for HD. While home from seminary on vacation I bought a 6" M-28-2 and a Bianchi 10L holster for $176. Since then I simply don't remember all the S&W revolvers and pistols I've traded for or bought. Several years ago I found a very nice M-28 virtually equivalent to what I once owned in seminary. I have been able to also find a very nice M-18-3 identical to what I had upon graduating seminary. I am trying to find a M-19 like the one I gave my father. My brother took it and traded it off. I am trying to find a 4" Ruger Mk. II.

Bought a nickeled Chief's Special from a local cop in 1970 for $80. That was my first purchase of a pistol as an adult, near as I can recall.

Purchased my first S&W in 1967. Model 18, .22lr Combat Masterpiece with a 4" barrel. I paid $72.50 and I still have it. I have nothing newer that is built as well, looks as good or shoots as well.

I have bought and sold more than 50 since I purchased that first one and I only regret selling two of them. Both were 29's; one was a 4" and one a 6 or 6 1/2", I don't recall. Whatever Dirty Harry had is what I had. I have a few that I have kept, but none mean more to me than that first one.

It does my heart good to see "M28-2" and "seminary" in the same sentence. (Luke 22:36)

My first S&W was a K38 with 6" barrel. My Dad came home one evening from work ( he was an over the driver) with it, handed me the gun, and said " this is yours". I was about 16 at the time and thought it was the grandest revolver around. Dad's gone now, but the Smith is in my safe and every time I touch that gun, Dad's there too.

Fuzzy on details! 1959, Rod and Gun club in France.

S&W 22/32 KIT GUN, 4" barrel, 6 shot, revolver.

Number $53 sticks in my mind.

Traded it in mid sixties for a Ruger Single-Six.

My first, a 19-3 4" that I bought the day I turned 21 in 1980. Went all the way in to downtown Houston, to the big Oshman's and bought it for $250. Still have it.

The following year I found a brand new 4" Model 57, with presentation case for $300 or $325 (I don't recall off hand). I really wanted a Model 29 but they were few and far between and if you could find one they wanted more for them.

Still have both of those guns. In fact, I think I have only sold off two of the guns I ever bought, a Model 36 (dumb move) and my Glock 21.

Model 17 8 3/8" barrel with a set of really bad home-made grips in V.G condition for $200.00 at a gunshow. I bought a set of K-frame combat grips on the way out for 6 bucks!!! This was about 7 years ago.
