Model 28-2 .357
I just purchased a 28-2 for a hell of a price, what is this gun worth in excellent condition without the box?

Welcome to the forum. Hard to say with out more info. 4" or 6" barrel? Blue finish I assume. Does the serial number start with a S or N? Pictures would really help but $400 to $500 should be in the ball park. Maybe a little more for LNIB. JMO.

If you have to ask what it's worth, that sounds like you don't know.
So how did you conclude that what you paid was a "hell of a price?"
Just wondering...

It should easily hit the $500 mark, in excellent condition.

It's the paperclip icon on the 'advanced' post window. If you have a DSLR or other high-res camera, you may need to resize them. The pop up window will tell you the max size.
There's an 'ultimate Highway Patrolman' thread in this subsection you might enjoy....

I've never seen a 28-2 go for $1000. In my area they are available in the $400-550 range, depending on condition.
P.S. Nice 28 you have a great price.

It has diamond targets on it but they could have been changed. I'll go back to one of my original questions, does the serial number start with a S or N? No matter what, for $200 you got a great deal on a great S&W.

I was thinking the same thing about the grips. if they are not original I'd take the grips off and put on the magna type. well I would probably do it anyway(and keep them of course) because I like the magnas on the 28-2. but thats just me.

Prices vary. An item is worth exactly what someone else is willing to pay for it. A lot depends on how quickly you want to sell, & how bad the buyer wants it. If it is (truely) a rare item... Caution: some sellers think everything they have is rare, problem is they are not so. If it is truely rare, then a buyer who really wants it would be willing to pay more.
Then there is the matter of condition. You say it is in excellant condition now. The trick is to use it & enjoy it, but minimizing the wear & keeping bad things like rust away. Original factory items like grips add value to a collector, & even if you use other grips the correct grips should stay with the gun. As others have stated, diamond targets are too early for your gun. You could buy the correct ones & sell the diamonds for a profit.
Model 28's are not rare. Still, there is a good market. You did get a great deal.
Nice find. We're all jealous!

I am not a S&W handgun guy. I had a couple years ago and sold them.I purchased a M&P AR 2 yrs ago, and have purchased several more since. This is the first S&W revolver I have owned in 15 years.I had an idea what is was worth, but like I said I am not a S&W expert.

The S serial number M28s are from about 1961 to some time in 1969 (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The diamond targets went to about 1967 so they could be right for your gun. The gun could have been ordered with the targets stocks, only a S&W letter would tell you. Have you taken the grips off and looked for any numbers stamped into the wood? I don't think the targets were usually stamped but you never know till you look.
The S serial number is some what more desirable just because it is an earlier gun If you post the serial number with xx as the last two digits we can tell what year it came from.
I still think you're looking at about $400 to $500.
Edit to say if you shoot this gun you might become a S&W revolver guy. They are usually great shooters.

The SR# is: S2660xx. I shot 38spl and .357 through the gun and it shoots great.Trigger is a little tight for my taste, but shoots great.

The S serial prefix on the 28-2 was used from 1962-1970. The stocks are correct period but the S&W historian says that 28s always shipped with the smaller Magna stocks and Targets were added by dealers or owners.
IMO this gun with these stocks is worth around $500+/- depending on variables.
You were correct when you said you got a great deal.

Never say "always" with Smith & Wesson. This Model 28-2 came to me in the original box with the target grips numbered (stamped) to the gun. The gun with its larger grips fits perfectly in the box, and the authentic end label indicates "T" in the "Stock" box, indicating target stocks. Serial # is N568xx; Roy Jinks says it was made in September, 1980.

I'm learning here as I have the same M28-2 with serial # S2834XX that has the diamond target grips but not serial numbered to the gun. I had made the assumption they came with the gun but perhaps they were changed out later during that same time period.
Would that be correct or would have they possibly been sold with those grips but not numbered?
Mine is about 90-95% percent and paid $250 for it a few years ago which I felt a bargain then. It's a shooter and field carry gun as I have a nicer 28 for looks and range shooting.

I believe I've read that most target grips were not numbered but as PALADIN's gun shows "never say never" with S&W. A letter from S&W is probably the only way you could know.

Thanks for that info as I didn't know that and learned something tonight.
I just checked a similar M-57 with diamond grips and a S serial and it also has no serial number on the grips.
Likely time to get off the money and some S&W factory letters.

I looked on 'another' forum that has etimated dates and the S266000 range shows late '66 to early '67 so it may have come with those diamond targets.
All the ones that my dept had came with targets but no one remembers if the dealer put them on or they shipped that way. I bought one that had worn out diamond targets that were 10 years too early for the gun. (No they didn't keep the boxes. And I thought they never threw anything away.)

This gun was purchased by me in 1968 looking just like it does now. It has a T marked in the stock part of the label on the box.

well maybe it's time for a history lesson as to why they were mostly shipped with the slim magnas? my guess is that since the gun was made primarily for law enforcement the slimmer grips make for a tighter grip and give the officer a better advantage to holding onto the gun if he ever got in a situation where a perp might take it in a struggle. also the slimmer grips would seem better to grasp in extreme stressful shooting situations. but they were sold to the general public so guess that's why we are seeing these examples. what do you guys, especially leo's think? does this make sense?

The magna grip was the standard on the 27 & 28 as well as most other models. The 29's and 57's were standard with the target grips. The 27 did not have target grips standard until around 1975.

What an incredible deal! That is an outstanding package for $200! It just goes to show that deals are still out there! I would leave the grips alone and shoot it as is!

There was a 4" 28-2 at the gunshow today marked for $395. Excellent condition with what appeared to be original magnas. Also a 6" asking $450.

don't do it, you will be sorry.
a deal like your comes along only once and a while and considering the model gun it is I wouldn't sell mine for double that.
if you want a solid, can handle anything gun that you can carry also, you need to keep the m 28 and count your lucky stars that you got it for such a great deal.

you won't be sorry, if you want a do all .357mag that can be carried or just put in the console, you can't go wrong with a M28 4".
after I got mine, my son-in-law liked it so much that he wanted one real bad because it was the first hand gun that he was able to hit with on the first shot being right handed but only having his left eye.
after owning many K frames in 4" and liking them but wanting something bit bigger to handle what ever I put in it for ammo I am glad I went the way of the N frame 28.
If you had to get down to one gun, the M28 would be at the top of my list.

The thing is if ya make a few bucks off of that gun ya won't be able to buy one like it for what ya bought it for and soon not likely what ya sold it for... they don't make em like that anymore and they are only going up in price. Y can always move it if ya need to later!
As far as original grips n all- some of the guys here are anal about that
Most of us would rather shoot the guns with comfortable grips if they told the truth...
