Found At Last! Model 18
After looking for a couple of years, I finally landed a nice Model 18. This is an 18-2 shipped in March of 1966. I had a fine time at the range with it already, discovered it has a really sweet trigger, and is very easy to keep on target. It's definitely worthy of keeping my K22 and 617 company.
Regards,
Jerry

Jerry, that is NICE. Congratulations.
That settles it. Gotta get me a four-inch K-22.

Ohh, me like, enjoy that fine revolver! My 18 was a bit fussy about it's diet but once figured out she's a keeper.

Great guns, those 18s. Got one about 3 or 4 years ago for $375, IIRC. Wouldn't be able to get it for that price now, I'm sure.
Congratulations; enjoy shooting it.

I have a 17, an 18, and a 41 and seldom go to the range without at least one of them. The 18 is my favorite for taking first time shooters. Mine does very well with the Federal 550 round bulk-pack ammo from Wal-mart. Your's looks great...nice photo.

Nice .22 Combat Masterpiece! I bought one about 10 years ago at a large chain sporting goods store. They have a reputation for not knowing much about collectible S@Ws. ( I've got lots of examples ). I talked them down to about $225. Just used it a few weeks ago to train two friends who were taking their ccw class. They both passed.

Very nice model 18. I would like to find one as well. I prefer a 4" barrel over a 6" myself.

Very nice looking model 18! Enjoy that fine S&W. I share your joy because I too just finished a quest to find one, and found this model 18-3 last week (see my earlier thread). Looked unfired, but was wearing aftermarket grips, which I replaced with factory targets:

Beautyful gun(s), the 4" .22lr S&W's K22 and Model 18's!
Great guns, I love them a lot, it was one of the first handguns I have been shooting with, years ago and my interest rekindled after watching all those beautiful guns here on the S&W forum.
So much so that I traded my 6" 617 no-dash for an 18-2...
You are all to blame for it!
Hope to be able to share pictures of it in a couple of weeks.
The paperwork to make it officially mine will take even longer than 'normal' in the Netherlands, as this gun has to be imported from Germany...

Nice model 18. My dream team is a 4" Model 18 and a 4" Model 15.

I bought my 1967 4"bbl combat masterpiece Model 18 in 1983 for $150 and it is the gun that I bring to the range to teach the NRA basic course. It is truly sweet and the rosewood grips are just so special. Can anyone say when the rosewoods began and ended? My other k's are walnut.

I've been on the lookout for a nice Model 18 for quite some time and finally found one a couple of months ago locally. It's nice little gun and fun to shoot.

Aahh...
All these nice guns here!
Can`t wait until I can shoot my very own 18-2...
At the moment it is somewhat lost in transit, Customs declarations etcetera...
But I CAN shoot my recent addition the Model 34, also great fun to shoot. In fact, it made me decide to trade the 617 for the lighter, better balanced Model 18.
And as in motorcycles, I seem to have developed a weak point for pre-1970 guns...

I own a 617 with the long tube. Wish I could trade it for a 18 for years.
Those nice pieces are somewhat scarce over there.
Congrats.

David, educate me. What makes the difference between a Model 18 and a Model 17 with a 4" barrel? 3Ts? Barrel profile?

Well, after looking at the SCSW and Jink's book, I've come to the conclusion that there is no difference (physically) between an M-18 and a 4" M-17. As a matter of fact, the SCSW says that the M-18 was discontinued in 1985 and replaced by the 4" M-17. It's just a matter of how S&W stamped the frame.

I always thought that the 4" model 17 had a heavy barrel as opposed to the slim tapered barrel of the model 18.

I wasn't trying to draw a distinction between Pre-18s and Pre-17s, so I apologize if my phrasing gave the wrong impression. I'd be happy with a five-screw K-frame .22 with a four-inch barrel regardless of how it was labeled.
But in general, I have always thought the Combat Masterpiece and Model 18 were characterized by ramp sights, whereas the shorter-barrel Pre-17s (which I believe all antedate the introduction of the K-22 Combat Masterpiece) had Patridge front sights.
There is a recent thread here somewhere showing this difference. I can't recall the topic line right now, but I think Mike Priwer posted photos that illustrate the distinction.

At long last:
My Model 18-2 arrived in at my dealers' from Germany!
Now all we have to do is the Dutch paperwork to make it mine...
Still have no photos of it, but I DO have the serial.
What do you guys make of it?
It is K6369xx

Jerry,
Very nice model 18, I am looking for one myself. Anyone know if they came in any shorter barrel lengths than the 4"? Also, will the model 18 fire 32short and 32long as well? Thanks
