Default 4" 28-2 pinned not recessed

Just looked at a 4" 28-2 today. Pristine, in box. Bangor Punta Blue. The box only had the original warranty and was glued, not stapled. It appears to be a police issue as a document in the box referrs to a cpl...from a local force that traded it in, in 2008. It is pinned but not recessed. Asking price is $499.00, but I am doing a 60 day lay away so negotiating the price would be less than civil. Considering the condition, I am not concerned with the price. My questions are: is pinned but not recessed correct for this era? and will it eat Win .357 mag 145 gr silvertip hp personal protection without destroying it? thank you for any input.

The gun is a transitional gun having a pinned barrel, but not being recessed, and should be from around the '82-'82 time frame.

It will handle any factory ammo made with ease!

Guns made during the transiton from -2 to -3 sometimes have a mix of features like this. I have a -2 model 13 with rescessed cylinder and non pinned barrel. And yes a model 28 will take a steady diet of full bore .357 mags loads.

Just as an aside, was the $499.00 to out of line?

it will handle anything you want to shoot out of it.
I put mine on the same par as my 686 6".
I have just the opposite of yours, Mine is recessed but not pinned.
they are just super nice guns with good balance and reliability.
here are a few pics of my m 28-2.

Not if the gun is in like new condition. It is almost impossible to beat an N frame .357.

I forgot to mention in my first post-

You may be able to destroy it with insane handloads, but it will not even hiccup on factory ammo.

It is easily worth $500 (or more) in pristine condition with box. I may not be a steal, but it's close.

I too have a -2 that is recessed but not pinned, kinda surprised to hear of two others in this same thread, and the OP's that is just the opposite. Must have been a lot of "mix and match" at the end of the -2 series.

Then comes along the 28-3 that is neither pinned or recessed.
Great guns either way.

I had a 19-3 that was pinned, but not recessed. I called S&W service department with the serial number. They actually were able to quickly look it up...they had a record of it being returned for service but couldn't say what was done. I always assumed the cylinder was changed at that time...that maybe they'd run out of recessed cylinders.

I'm guessing yours, being so pristine, is a transitional gun. I don't think the price is out of line if it's really nice...what does $499 buy you in a new S&W these days?????

The answer to that is so sad that it is best left unstated.

They fooled around mixing and matching for a long time. My HP was made 1979 or 80 and is pinned but not recessed. There was one listed behind mine in the ultimate hp thread the same age that was recessed & not pinned.

Gentlemen ,N941*** is a 27-2 that is counterbored ,but not pinned. There appear to be quite a few 'transition' K and N frame magnums from this era with mixed features.

At 5C, shoot and enjoy your new 28. I also take advantage of the lay away process whenever possible ,as I don't own a credit card.
I currently have a 27-2 on lay away that needs to come home soon.

Welcome to the forum ,,You're hooked now!

Regards , Allen Frame

A brace of H.P.s,
