Default Another..My First 28-2

Oh...gun shows. I went on Sat and found nothing but decided Sunday might change things; and I found something. Did I mention I love "N" frames? I have a mid-70's Lawman 4" shoulder holster so I had to get some heavy steel to put in it.

Here is my first 28-2 Highway Patrolman; a clean 4" barrel SN N587xxx shooter. A quick look in the SCSW makes me think it's probably a 1978 or 1979 but I'll have to do some more research. It shows some normal wear but nothing much out of the ordinary. I will need to replace the front screw on the rear sight because someone put a phillips head there.

Does anybody recognize these stocks? They are wrong.....but feel great. In the second photo, notice there is a small hairline crack in the left side (starting at the top and running through the S&W grip emblem but stopping just below it. They feel so good, I plan on refinishing the stocks and repairing the crack. That said, I'll be looking for a set of footballs to put on it. I just ordered a box for it (from a member on the site). Hope you guys like the pics as much as I enjoy looking at them on the forum.

Below, notice the small crack in the grip....to be repaired soon.

Nice find, you will enjoy this one for sure. No ID on the grips but they look like Roper's or Jordan's. Definitely worth the effort to repair and refinish! Thank's for posting.

I found a set of Ropers online that are very similar but without the S&W insert. If the grips are Ropers or Jordans, I guess someone installed the S&W logo in them.

Jordon's grip design covers the back strap, a necessity for his extra large hand size. Those aren't Jordons but I bet they date to way before the gun. I'd think the lack of a speedloader cut out dates them to an earlier era.

It's a good thing I'm retired because I probably would have stayed home today to work on this.
I've started repairing the crack in the grips. To stabilize the crack, I drilled a small hole on the inside of the grips just beneath the S&W insert. The hole passes through the crack. I filled the hole with epoxy and inserted a small steel pin.

Near the top of the grip (still on the inside) I carved out a depression in a 1/2" square area that covered the crack and filled the depression with epoxy. I've got it clamped together now and will work on the outside of the grips tomorrow. Hopefully, the crack will then be stabilized and not extend all the way to the bottom of the grip.

I'll sand them smooth, fill the outside visible crack with wood filler and stain to match the rosewood (I think they're rosewood). Then a few coats of tung oil and out to the range. I'll post some "after" pics once I finish.

Thanks for all the comments. I'll keep working trying to ID the grips.
