Another Date of Manufacture Request
Just acquired a 2" Model 19-3 serial 1K901XX. Please help with date of manufacture.
Pinned and recessed, target hammer/trigger. Gun seems to have been fired very little. Faint turn line and very little holster wear, but blue finish in bad shape inside trigger guard on bottom of frame, where 2nd finger hits frame to rear of trigger guard and where web of hand hits frame.
Almost looks like someone with something on their hands held the firearm and then put it away for 30 years without wiping it down.
thanks
Ed

I am going to say 1970, according to the SCSW. The 2 1/2" barrel model 19/66's are a couple of my favorites.

I'm sure the usual "Expert Guessers" will be along shortly. I've been writing history letters with Roy Jinks for over one year. I've seen ship dates vary as much as 3 years between guns consecutively numbered. The only way you can pinpoint a ship date is through a factory letter.

And keep in mind that the date of MANUFACTURE is generally not available for Smith & Wesson firearms. As Don says above, the records Roy Jinks and he use contain the SHIPPING date from the factory, which can be quite some time from the time the gun was made. For the latter, the year based on the SCSW is going to be the best guess available.

Thanks for the info. Don't need exact ship date. Just interested in approximate age.

Don, Im a great fan of the Mr. Jinks letters. Have several. Some guys just want a WAG on ship dates, to perhaps sell a gun at the the club or a show. Or to link it to a relative that left them a family heirloom. Most of us old guys that can still retain facts and know there is no such thing as a mfg. date are having some fun, the essence of this hobby. Thank you for joining Mr. Jinks in his task as factory historian. You are appreciated. And admit it, you are having fun. Best
