Can Pre-27s join in?
S162839, shipped 30 Jan 1956 -- so 54 years old just a few days ago, and I think unfired in all its years outside of the factory.

My model Pre-27 serial number 1622xx along with her/my performance score. I'm researching what may turn out to be a colorful history. A great gun with 5 screws, 6 groove backstrap, recessed chambers, 6.5" barrel, after market Italian target grips, and a joy to shoot. A 1956 DOM. Enjoy!

I bought this 5" brand new in 1973 for $168s. It was bare bones with no options. I sent it back to the factory right away and got every option. My name engraved in a gold oval, presentation grips, presentation case, red post, white outline, target hammer & trigger.

Mainly pre 27s except for one Model 27. I no longer own all of them but I still have most of them. All 3.5" guns, and they letter just as you see them.

I have a model 27 no dash that I bought used in 1968 for $150. The gun was made in 1957 and has the 8-3/8 inch barrel. I have used it as an occasional range gun for 42 years and it is still my most accurate shooter in .357 magnum. The trigger feel is superlative, and the gun retains much of its high gloss blue finish. I put Ahrends grips on it, which seem more comfortable than the original grips.

You know how much we all like our 357Magnums.
Quote from the factory letter on this one.
3.5" 357 Magnum S758** shipped July 25 1950 and delivered to Frank Budge Co. Miami Fl. Records indicate " shipped with a 3.5" barrel ,blue finish ,checkered walnut grips .
The 1950 catalog describes the hammer as follows; Swedged spur deeply checkered and notched for thumb tip clearance, shortened hammer fall weight and timed for uniform ignition".
This is what is referred to as a high hammer spur. In the 1950s the factory offered what they refer to as the low hammer spur which dipped the position of the hammer spur."
A 4" Registered Magnum that shipped with a 6" barrel, blue ,and walnut Magnas with Call gold bead front sight.
A lot has happened to this one in the 74 years since it shipped to the Illinois State Police on
April 10 1936. The Magnas are gone,as is the Call gold bead. The barrel was cut down to 4". Buffed and bright nickeled ,and humiliated with a set of Plastic stags. Hammer and trigger modified to target configuration ,and checkered.
It will be gently restored throughout this coming year.
all 11 of the N frames in the front of this picture are N frame 357s. 10 have checkered topstraps.
Regards , Allen Frame

My goodness, the cost of the shotgun shells used as prop rods in that photo must have been enormous!

Hi,
Your post is a few years old, so you may no longer have the 27-2 in the picture. If you have, I wondered how much play your cylinder has (sideways and front to back) and how much room there is between it and the barrel. I have one pretty much the same age (1975 I think) and well used. It appears to leak a lot of gas sideways. I'm suspecting the extractor to be somewhat worn giving too much play.
Would appreciate your help.
regards,
Robert

Wow, Robert, there are over 350 posts in this thread going back almost 6 years. It would be helpful if you address your question to a specific member/poster, or ask a general question about acceptable cylinder/barrel gap and "sideways" (rotational?) play.
I just checked the cylinder gap on four of my S&Ws with a set of automobile feeler gauges:
15-8 .010 goes, .012 no go
19-3 .008 goes, .010 no go
28-2 .006 no go
29-2 .006 no go
Others will chime in and tell us what the factory spec is; I have no idea but you can see there is considerable variance in my specific firearms. Edit: I did a bit of research. Apparently, .010 is at the top end of acceptable gap, but still within factory specifications. Note that measuring should be done with the the hammer at full cock. And .006 was the smallest gauge I had so I don't know the actual measurement on the 28 or 29.
Get a set of gauges and check the gap on your revolver. Obviously, my 15-8 is a newer model and probably has more rounds fired than the other three. It was a police turn-in and shows significant wear. The 29 is probably 95%. The 28 was carried by a deputy sheriff for 20 years but also shows little wear and was probably not shot much.
As to sideways/rotational play, all four of my guns have some slight movement with the 15 having the most. I have no way to measure it accurately. Also, all four have a bit of front to back movement if pressure is applied to the cylinder and against the exposed end of the ejector rod.
Google Cylinder Gap and you'll get some good information
Don't know if this is helpful, but it's the best I've got. Here's one link:

Tom,
Where are your Model 27s?
I will also include some 327s and 627s even thought they are post 1989 revolvers.
My 6 shooters
Then there are these 8 shot model 27s that were introduced in 2000 and are still available today. Here is one of each variation that has been produced so far. All revolvers bear the same serial numbers with different prefixes. All six revolvers pictured in this photo are unfired and unturned since leaving the factory.
The 8 shots are also made in stainless and scandium alloy. These were first introduced in 1997. Lew Horton had commissioned 300 of the 8 shot model 627s. That was all that there were supposed to be. I had originally wanted serial number 357 but that was not going to happen. So the revolver in the upper left corner of the bottom photo is number 27. These sold so fast that LH decided to do another 300. So the revolver in the upper right corner of the last photo is number 357.
I love the look of the older ones. I prefer the old blue with some nice stocks. I adore the old top strap checkering, but these new ones just shoot so well they are hard to ignore.
I have more 27/327/627 revolvers, but they have not been photographed yet.

I think this is one of the best threads I've ever come across. And I have determined this is my favorite picture of any gun....ever. Just outstanding! Doublesharp, I will PM my information for inclusion in your will.
Thanks to all for contributing such fine images.

Stag/Horn grips are normally not my thing, but damn if that is not one of the nicest set ups I have ever seen. I love everything about that revolver!

bought this 27-2 in an online auction for 299 Euro, and found it to be a great shooter with tight lockup and perfect trigger. Ahrends Retro targes came from my stock of stocks... Prices in Germany are very low at the moment.
regards from Germany

I'll start with the best one to me, a 5" pre-27 from 1954:
Followed by it's younger cousin, a 5" M27-2:
And finally a restored (from serious abuse) and round butted 3.5" M27-2:
Some day I'd like a 5-screw 3.5" but these will have to do for now. (smile)

My one and only:
[Edit] Seeing this old thread, I thought I should update my picture. Still my one and only. I have since swapped out the grips for some smooth magnas and swapped out the hammer/trigger for semi-target hammer/smooth combat trigger. I like it much better in this configuration.

snw19 357,
Lowly? Don't see a thing wrong with that one. If you really don't like it I bet there are any number of members here who can find a home for it. (smiley face goes here)

Lots of great M27 types y'all.
I've owned two, but let one get away years ago to fund something else. Never again . . . I hope!
Here's my 3 1/2" barreled Model 27-2.
I hope you'll humor me here . . . I'm experimenting with my new, home-made light box with different settings and backgrounds . . . and can't find my gray card!
Here are new photos tonight, on a maroon background . . . I'm still trying to master the exposure settings. It is hard to photograph shiny metal objects, as we all know!
Same gun, last week on white . . .
Keep that eye candy coming!!!
Tom
