My memory must be getting worse..."gave"? Hmmm...I don't remember it that way...I remember that I let you borrow and shoot it. But like someone else on this forum said in another thread...never let your girlfriend/wife shoot your model 10 because you won't get it back!! Hahaha
I'm glad I found you a model 10 of your own...I mean ANOTHER one of you own!

The same two 10's that I've shared before. Only change is that the 10-8 now sports BK's which I wholeheartedly endorse. But I'd like to take this opportunity to ask Model 10 fans for a leather holster recommendation. Interested in something that is traditionally befitting of this classic. Something for me to use in the rare need for either a woods trek or emergency need.
A '65 10-6 w/ numbered stocks and a '78 10-8.

Bianchi #5BHL, preferably in black or tan basketweave. This is my Model 65-1 with a refugee from a $10.00 box at a gun show.

M10’s seem like the very heart and soul of Smith & Wesson, we should all have at least one, actually it is very hard to stop buying them.

I typically lean towards the shorter barrel guns. But I think a 5" tapered barrel 10 is one of the most balanced guns there is. And you get bonus points for nickel. The only one I thought was cooler was this guy who got one from his Dad and the finish was matte blued. Or some kind of painted version that they shipped to Cuba or something like that. I don't know the whole story behind it, other than that is was one of the coolest 10's I've come across.
I can't remember if I posted it before, so..... here it is:

Thanks ABPOS, I picked up both of those 5” Nickel M10-5’s from Gander Mountain at the same time right before they announced that they were going out of business, they are a couple of years apart serial number wise and one is marked TWC XXXX, for The Wackenhut Corporation, they do balance well and shoot great!

Gander's headquarters was not that far from me. I remember when it was just a mail order business. Then they got stores. Now that building is the American Girl Doll place and something else. LOL.
I remember seeing a nice blued tapered barrel 10 at a Gander store several years ago but their pricing was always whacked. I think about 5-7 years ago they wanted 500 bucks for one. If my memory serves me correctly. The finish did look good but I was too focused on Autoloading pistols at the time. But I sure as heck did notice it.
I hope you didn't have too pay overly much for them. Being Gander and all. I suppose even if they were a bit steep they might be worth it. They sure are pretty.

This is the revolver that brought me to the forum:
Shown here with stocks purchased from gumpys - thanks! It came with Pachmayrs which I didn't care for the looks of.
In about 2004 I heard there was a small one-man dealer in New York selling off NYPD 10s - he had images of all of them and you could pick which one you wanted. I think I spent $150 + $15 to my FFL. (Anyone remember this older gent?)
It is in great shape with only sporadic marks and some muzzle wear (which I touched up). Great trigger and will produce a 1" bench rest group from 25 yards with most ammo.
I had had other revolvers and other S&Ws, but this was my first S&W DA revolver - it is so beautifully made. I have had a number of beautifully made autos - including a P210 - but the way this 10-6 was put together takes the cake for craftsmanship.

There are a bunch of nice looking M10/M&Ps here in this thread.
This 10-6 don't look so hot but it's been my nightstand gun for about 25 years. It took the place of a like new Colt Trooper III that was stolen in a burglary of my home back then. It sure doesn't have the looks of the Colt but it was only about $150 at the local pawn shop and it does the same job.

My latest Model 10; a Model 10-10 that shipped 9/90. Holster, speed loaders with holders included. I still need to get a Model 10ND, a Model 10-1, a Model 10-4 (good luck) and a Model 10-9 to fill out my Model 10 collection goal.

I've bought and sold I don't know how many Model 10's over the years. I recently found myself without one, so I picked this one up to fill the gap.
10-11 from about 2000 I guess. Those three letter S/N's are a pain.
It's got all the "bad" stuff. Not pinned, MIM parts, frame mounted firing pin, round butt, new design cylinder release, and "goodyear grips." But it has a really nice trigger, and those "goodyears" are really comfortable. They also clear a HKS speedloader better than any other grips I've ever used. I don't think it's been fired outside the factory but can't prove that of course.

Model 10s
Newest model 10 came home today. No dash model 10 with factory numbered diamonds dated to 1960, pictured at the top. Doesn't look like she was fired much. Some of my favorite warm weather carry guns!

My contribution, my Nickel 10-5 from 1973 and my 65-2 from 1978 both are great shooters.

Dang man, a little character is nice in old guns anyhow, but knowing the dings on it were from something like that AND it was your dad's and you're going to pass it on, very very cool dude!

WOW! I'm not normally a jealous kind of guy, but that is a very cool set! Love them all and I love the diamond magnas and the two bobbed ones look cool too! Very nice! I have a 64 snubby with walnut original style magnas, but not original to the gun. I don't yet have a model 10 snub, but I'll have a few one day too. Very nice set!

Yes! I do remember. Around that time there was a guy selling turn ins on either GB or, more likely, Auction Arms for that price. Unfortunately you couldn't pick and you got luck of the draw, so i bought two. One became a gift for my father but i have the other. If it wasn't the same gent it's a big coincidence. I've always wondered where they cane from. I'll try to get some pics.

I bought a 10-5 three inch and left it at my daughters place in Northern California. Yep, some low life broke in and stole every thing I had ever giver her. She eventually got back a 1942 H&R 9 shot revolver that had belonged to my step-dad. That upset me and I bought another 10-5, 10-8, 10-10, and a 10-11 for a total of six. One of the Australians from Victoria I put in a display along with other Victoria Police Academy items. The other five are scattered around the bedrooms.
I have no idea how the one photo keeps coming across upside-down. I tried everything and gave up. Here they are!!

If by "Victory", you're referring to the Australian state where the M-10 guns served police, the state is Victoria. It's to the south of New South Wales, and contains the large city of Melbourne.
It is bordered on the west by South Australia, best known city being Adelaide.
If you post Victory, people think you mean the .38-200 guns from WW II.
Victoria state police used both round and sq. butt M-10's, and in both three and four-inch barrel lengths. Oddly, it was the short barrels that had the square butts! Detective ranks had M-36's.
You can see these guns in use on the old TV show, Blue Heelers. I think it's still on YouTube. One of the police women later played a Navy officer on, Sea Patrol, which also has been on YouTube.
Alas, your picture didn't post.
BTW, more recent Aussie cop shows, reality ones, show the officers wearing Glocks. Those I've seen originate in Sydney, NSW and in Queensland, main city being Brisbane.

Factory Chrome Finish 1905/4th (Pre-10s) of the 1930s
Here's a old thread that got lost. Not many of these around.
My interest in the M&Ps / pre-10s has been the odd-ball and lesser produced.
As over 3 Million M&Ps have been produced (someone with specific stats please jump in to add / refine this quantity) I did not collect M&Ps for many years until I chose just certain production runs like the 1899 Army / Navy, the 1902 Navy and any pre-war M&P with Target sights until I found my first FACTORY CHROME, 1905/4th model.
I now have 2. One is 99% (no box) and the other is ANIB. They sat in the S&W Safe since the late 1930s even during WWII.
In 1960 they were taken from the safe / storage and sent to a few large dealer / distributors at discount prices.
UPDATED: .38 M&P 1905, 4th, Factory Chrome Finish
See Photo 2017 S&W Symposium. My son and I with 2 matching 1905/4th in Factory Chrome. One 99% (no box) the other NOS/ANIB. Both were shipped to Greenblatt, NYC in 1960, with 1938 serial numbers
Enjoy ! R.S. "Sal" Raimondi, Sr.

I believe that R.M. Vivas is the name of that ex-NYPD gun dealer that a couple of you are trying to recall.
He used to post here.
Besides former NYCPD M-10's, he had a batch from a horse race track, where they'd been used by the guards.
Oops: I see that my prior post has now also appeared. I didn't think it "took", so posted this, with the added comment about the race track guns.

Well-I can't seem to be able to post a pic here, but I have always like the 5 inch pencil square butt 10-5 - I like them all, but it's my favorite. I have a group of 3 M-10's for sale here on the forum if you want to see them. I have a 5 inch that my wife got me for my BD several years ago with U.S. Army grips on it-I won't be selling it. It was made in the year of my manufacturer - 1846-Great guns-no more like these!

What a great thread! I just spent the last few hours reading it from beginning to end. Thanks to all for contributing to this tribute to the awesome Model 10.
I just located a like-new 10-8 made in 1979. This is my first and only Model 10.

My favorite way to get nice holsters is in so called junk bins or boxes at gun shows or old gun shops. The most common holster to find is usually a 4” K frame holster. Often very inexpensive. It is not unusual to find holsters that originally sold for $50 or more in such places for under $20 in great shape

Might have posted this before, but hey, they're still a couple of nice M10s.

I got mine in a round about way.I used to live in NYC and you'd always see NYC police officers standing with their Model 10's in a variety of holsters. Probably one of the most common was the Jay Pee which was like a leather bucket with retention strap. Some had black basket weave holsters from Bianchi, Smith and Wesson, and a bunch of others. Moved to Louisiana and after about a year got a summonds from the workmens comp folks. So when I went up there I had a copy of a dealers FFL in my wallet. So fater the court case was over I had some free time. Took the LIRR out to Mineola. ASked the boss if he had any model 10's. walks behind the counter hands me a big cardboard box full of model 10's. Showed him my Louisiana Carry permit. and one by one I start pulling them out of the box. Found two that were really nice and chose one. Putthe others away and handed him the one I picked out. Gave him the FFL and paid him the $100 he asked plus $20 for shipping. The revolver got home before I did. Picked it up and did the 4473 and out the door. Best deal I ever made. No one wanted them as the wondernines was what everyone wanted.Still have it and ocassionally shoot it. There is a gent who sells used holsters on this site and over the years has provided with many holsters. They are used bit in excellent condition. Few are just plain leather but the majority are black casket weave. Some black shoe polish shines them right up. Our sheriff's range has a safety requirement that you must have a holster to put your pistol or revolver in while reloading or not being fired. Frank

I thought I had added a few more of mine but can't find them, so here they are. These are all 10-5's.

And as per numerous previous posts, I was first issued a Model 10 with 3" barrel Square Butt which was the Standard issue sidearm of the New South Wales Police Force. Some of these photos are not mine.

Time to dust this old thread again. Funny, I spend a long time devouring each post from beginning to end. I have a 2" and a 4" model 15-3 and recently bought a 4" round butt, heavy barrel 10-8 which was made in 1983. The gun was only $283, which isn't much these days and it came with magna grips and a Tyler-T adapter.
The side plate has some pitting and the gun has a lot of blue loss. I installed a Wilson spring kit (14#) and ordered a factory DAO hammer. I will have the barrel bobbed to 3" and slab-sided with a Novak dovetail installed for a front sight. This will be my EDC. I currently carry the 2" model 15. My model 10 will wear Pachmayr grips and either a parkerized finish or I will send it out to be hard chromed. Fun toy!

That's a great idea in revamping your used, M10 4" R/B. Personally, I still regard my M64 4" R/B DAO as an fully capable example of a 'Fighting Revolver'. I bought mine back in the late 1980's as an 'exemplar' to replace our older, assorted Revolvers. At the time, we had an assortment of 2" & 4", Colts & S&W's in service, & I proposed my example as an standard issue model. However, as we now know those days saw the initiation of the semi automatic Pistol for Duty, & the Administration decided upon the Sig P.226 in .40 for standard issue. But, as I had purchased my 64 as an POW, it was mine to keep & cherish, which I still do. Sometimes I wish it was a 3", but I already have my 3" M640, so it's just not worth the expense of rebarreling. I have always preferred the S&W R/B configuration over the S/B, & all my S&Was are now Round, even down to my 4" M21, .44 Spl. My only
exception remains my long owned 6" .22 LR H.E., circa 1915 +/-. Good Luck with your pending conversion, although I fear what it's going to cost you when all is done !!
Best, Dom P. / dpast32

I used some Super Blue cold bluing on the ugly model 10 which will be getting the barrel chopped and refinished soon. I ordered another side plate due to this one having pitting on it. I'm surprised how the gun looks better now. Kind of like the truck with the cheap "50 foot paint job". It amazing how my attitude towards it has perked up too.

I just LOVE those Model 10's, and or any of the M&P Series. Although I've always been partial to the original, aka 'skinny' barrel variants, they unfortunately don't shoot as well as the later HB configuration. When I first went on the job in May of 1980, our primary issue were S&W & Colt 4" .38 Special Revolvers, along with an assortment of 2" versions, again of both makes which were used for times when the shorter barrel was more desirable. My very first Off Duty weapon was a beautiful S&W M-10 2" R/B, which I still hate myself for trading in towards a .380 ACP which literally fit in my back pocket. Well, live & learn as they say, for when I went to sight it in the grips split in half, thereby rendering it nonfunctional !! OK, back to a 2" Air Weight carried primarily in an ankle rig. Over the years I literally wore that rig out & finally had to replace it. These days, I still own numerous assorted Revolvers, even in the 'age of the automatic'. Years ago I was fortunate enough to run across an NIB 2" M-642 with Factory Magna-Porting. It must have been some form of 'special run' from one of the S&W Distributors, possibly Ashland, RSR, or someone. Although it's not a target model, it will surely suffice for any up close & personal defensive scenarios I might encounter now that I'm Retired. 'Long Live The S&W Model 10 M&P Revolvers' !
Best, dpast32
