Default Model 34 DOB please

Just picked up a like new Model 34-1 (#H16XXX) today. It has a 4" barrel and blue finish. Could someone please give me an approximate date of mfg.?

Hi, have a look at the letter and number on the bottom of the grip frame - probably M if there is a letter. S & W used the H prefix for the J frame .32s and .38 S & Ws.

Right you are. After a closer look with these old eyes, that "H" is a "M".

That puts its ship date probably in early 1971. It's a nice gun, enjoy!

murphydog I hope it's OK to piggy-back on this thread. Not sure of the rules here yet. I have a model 34-1 also with M2249XX on the bottom of the grip frame. Do you have a date for this one? How many did S&W make of this model do you suppose?

I also have a model 34-1 with the M prefix letter. Mine. I believe, was made in 1970. I paid $85.00 for it in like new condition in 1972!!! The very best light .22 handgun I've ever owned (and I've owned many!). Enjoy it.
