Joe's the man to go to on presentation case restoration. Joe can qoute you a price based on what he needs to do like refinish the entire case, just the inner liners, or replace a hinge. I feel it's his place to do that.

I have had Joe do several cases for me. He is good, and very reasonable. He is also quite a good guy to deal with, and like Art said, he knows exactly what you'll need, and how to do it right.
Here is another one by Joe. It is the case from my 629 P&R 6"-

Case restoration!
Thank you to all that have sung my praise! ! ! I'm a retired old fart working at a hobby that I enjoy seeing the results of my labor! For those who have inquired, I get $35.00 plus return shipping per set of liners. This is my standard price unless your liners are baddly broke up. I only restore your original liners, I am unable to manufacture a liner! I can also replace a broken hinge with an exact replacement and I can also refinish the outside of the cases if required!
This is a before and after of my pride and joy. I have seen only three of these cases, all of which I restored!
I lied!
This is a black case for the early 44 Magmuns and I can manufacture a set of liners for these cases! The originals are so poorly made they are impossible to restore and/or duplicate!
If anyone has any questions about these cases and the restoration please email me at [email protected]

Joe, from what I can see here you do excellent work and I have a question, if you have a liner with a crack or split as a lot of them do, are you able to repair that split and or do you reinforce from the back? Thanks, Bob

When I restore the type of liners that crack and many times have holes and/or pieces missing I use spray foam in the back. This foam reinforces the liner in future use and it provides a base for the needed repairs to the front side. After the repairs are made I reflock the top and the bottom liner to insure a good color match.
This is a liner that was crack and broken!

Joe - You have email. Posted pics below are same that is in e-mail.
I have this box for my 29-2 that has peeled off liner outer cover. Is this the kind of condition that you can easily restore.
Thanks.

Case Restoration
Hey gunhaha
This is what your case will look like when I am done!
Please send me the liners without cleaning them up? There is a little tag with printing on it and I believe it is in the barrel channel. These tags are almost always GONE! Also the blue plastic pull tabs are usually GONE! This set of liners will cost $35.00 plus return shipping to restore!

The little tag in the barrel channel is loose sticker note saying "Lift Tab for Literature". I think its just an instruction to lift the blue tabs out to get the bottom liner out as the paperworks are under the liner.
PM or e-mail me the address to send the case for your restoration.
I assume from the your post above that you just want me to send just the liners (upper foam and lower styro) and not the box/case itself.

I sent him the box with the liners- if you send just the liners, there is a chance that they may break in transit, IMHO. I also had Joe touch up the case and fix a hinge, so if there is anything about the case that may need his attention, he also does work on the case at a very reasonable rate. Top notch gentleman to work with.

Electric case?
Actually I spend the last part of my electrical career working on a local NASA station as a High Voltage lineman. I incorporated some of this high voltage experience into an anti-theft device for the guns stored in the S&W presentation cases. To date I have sold only one of the cases. I am waiting for an email from the collector that bought it as it was shipped over a month ago! I wish he would email me with his opinion of the device. Would anyone else like to try one?
Thanks to all that have pumped my ego!

Just got my 27-2 case back from Joe. Just a couple of complaints here:
His restoration work is way to perfect. His communication is way to good. His turn around time is way to quick. Lastly, his prices are way to reasonable.
So, if you don't mind dealing with these issues, by all means send him your nasty, old presentation cases :-)
Well done, Joe!
Regards,
Tom

The pithy little 640 I’m customizing didn’t come with a pre-case although I may well have one made. You know, just something to pass down to my kids.

Would anybody care to offer an opinion on what one of these presentaion cases for a 4" would be worth when it only has the plastic liner? The wood looks good.

cases
My wife (for whatever reason) decided to re-do two of my M629 cases. I informed her that jcelect does them for next to nothing. Still, she wanted to try it. First one turned out just "ok". I emailed the gentleman and asked a few questions. The time he must have taken to answer the questions and send some info.......well, he probably could have done a restoration on one! To the point, he was incredibly friendly and beyond helpful. She did the second case and then re-did the first one again. Came out absolutley great due to his generosity. I feel somewhat guilty. Again, a very nice fellow and thank you, sir.

Send it to Joe and he will restore it for $35.00 plus shipping then you'll have a very nice case.

Joe,
If the case was originally for a gun with an 8 3/8 inch barrel, can it be modified to fit a 6 inch barrel?

I'm not sure how to tell, it was offered to me to purchase and I thought it might be a good candidate to send to Joe. I have a 4" Mod 29-3 that would fit in it.

Another cudoo to Joe. He reflocked my Model 57 presentation case and it looks better than it did new! Man, its so pretty. Still haven't put the Model 57 in it yet, don't want to stain the flocking. I just leave it laying open on my desk so I can admire it.
Many thanks Joe for a great product, a great price, and fast shipping!

Out of ignorance I must ask. What does this do to the value of the box? Is it supposed to be seamless from the original? Or do you disclose this when/if you resell
I only ask because I just bought a beautiful 29-2 and the box has two slight holes from wear.
I appreciate any response

It will definitley hurt the resale value of the box.Hardcore collectors want EVERYTHING to be 100% original.I would not feel right selling a re-flocked box as original and most collectors spending the big bucks for mint guns can spot re-work from a mile away.In NO way am I taking away from the awesome work he does.If your case is as bad as some pictured in this thread than by all means have it done,But if it is just a little rough around the edges it's best to leave it alone. If your box is junk and you have it re-flocked it will add $35 to the value of the box,The cost of the work. These boxes are 40yrs old plus you can't expect them to be perfect.

Are the presentation box's ok to store the guns in, or should they only be used for displaying (showing off) the gun?
How rare is the presentation box for the 27-2 with the 3 1/2" barrel. Seems like I never see them on these type threads.

Storage?
Hey ben_g1
Storage in these restored cases is a question every collector must answer himself! There were 4 different types of liners used in these cases from 1960-1983 and many guns were shipped from the factory IN THE CASE! I'm sure this caused many cases to be cracked during shippment to the different gun shops. All my N frame guns are stored in period correct cases. Many are original but some are restored. I would caution the collector against using profuse amounts of oil on the gun as it WILL stain the new flocking and/or cloth! Probably the best way to store in the case is to use Renaissance Wax!

I'll say up front that although I haven't had a case done by Joe yet, I enjoy chatting with him @ OGCA, and not to hijack the thread, but is anyone aware of a K-frame presentation case other than the Texas Ranger types? I would like to have a nice nest for my Project 616 now that it is done, and an original appearing wood case sounds pretty attractive. Of course with the full under lug, it wouldn't fit in the standard TR case, but I would need that 4" size. Any ideas out there?

I have a 27 with the 3.5" barrel, presentation cases for them are incredibly rare....so, i was thinking, why not have one of the guys doing the kydex holsters mold you a lower liner(tray), then send that to jcelect to be flocked, the kydex comes in many thicknesses, and it would hold up way better than the original liners...... you could then make it for any size gun and accessories you wanted, right?
