Default Model 64-1 stainless MPD marked..

I picked up a Model 64-1 today. Pinned barrel, SN#1D25510 and MPD also stamped on bottom grip frame. I recall someone posting about a similar MPD marked S&W revolver but cannot find the thread. It has a few minor cosmetic issues but seems to be tight with a very good bore and cylinder face. I will post pics later.

Very nice revolver.

Not sure if Minneapolis Police Department ever had Model 64 as issue guns?

Was it an old police gun?

The dealer who had this revolver was pretty sure it was a Miami P.D. issue handgun.

I would say to call both PDs up and ask for their firearms department and then if you get transfered to them, they should still have a record of it. Just give them the serial numbers. rz625-8 thats what I did when I bought my 65-2 with pinned barrel 4 inch that had a Texas Department Of Corrections numbers on mine.

Nice one coneten. Miami seems to make sense as their proximity to salt water would predicate a stainless weapon.

With that being said my research on Miami PD guns seems to indicate that Tubbs carried a blue j frame model 38 snub and Crocketts' Bren Ten was stainless. I think we can eliminate it being a vice squad weapon and it probably was carried by a patrolman.

Coneten you have a nose for locating those PD marked smiths. I still regret not getting that Ky State police 1940's era m & p. I think a retired trooper ended up with it if memory serves. Take care Brother.

Coneten, DOB appears to be 1976-1977. At that time stainless Smiths were very hard to come by and most depts were satisfied with blue weapons. This makes me think a seaside police dept with a little money and a big order. I think Miami is probably correct Sir.

Rick, I thought about the stainless advantage in the humid sub-tropical climate in Miami. There are also some stainless Smith .40 cal semi autos around here that are Dade County marked. It seems likely that there are a few more revolvers like mine out there. Thanks for the info.
