Default Is this 29 a shooter or collectable?

Hello all,
Brand new here but have been lurking for some time. I picked up a 29-2 with a 6 inche barrel recently and have a few questions. First what's the value? Second would you shoot this or put it up as collector piece. Third is there a good source to get the tools that it's supposed to have other than ebay. I plan to restore the box so I will need them. Also any info would be appreciated. Thanks

What do you know of it’s history? Looks like a very faint turn line and no wearing on the edges or barrel tip. I would say it’s been shot, but shot very little. I would say it is a shooter grade gun that is in really good shape and deserves to be taken care of whether it’s shot anymore or not. I do not see it as a collected though.

It looks like a standard 29 to me although it's nice to have the case with it. Looks like a pinned barrel and post diamond checkered stocks so it's certainly of interest, but there were a lot of 'em made that way.

I think that I'd shoot and enjoy it.

I'd shoot it and clean it well after every range trip. It will hold its value if taken care of.

Let's put it this way: It's a collectible if you want to collect it. If that's the case, you will be one of a rather small group of like minded collectors----but that group will grow as time passes.

Shoot it a bit but keep it nice and baby it. Since it's already been fired a bit you won't hurt it's resale value down the road if you take it out every once in a while and put a few rounds downrange.

Joe Cebull is the man to talk to about refinishing the inside of your case. My brother had one done by him and all I can say is what a professional looking job he did on it. As for your tools for the inside, post a thread in the Wanted to Buy forum here. I did that a few months ago for the very same reason and for a 6 1/2" 29-2 in nickel I bought recently. Within a few days I got both the cleaning rod and the SAT (sight adjustment tool, otherwise known as a screwdriver ).

That is a nice looking gun you got there man!

Mine are range guns otherwise pampered safe queens. But I can take them out of the safe wipe them down, fondle them, oil them up and away they go back in the safe. Collectable for sure.

Thank you all very much. Looking through the box, I did find the original warranty card with the date of purchase and the store it was bought at. Purchased august 3 of 81. Don't recognize the store per se but I know the town the store was in and it's local so the gun as been local far as I know. Serial number N815xxx. I was coming to the same conclusion as others. Shoot, enjoy, take very good care of. Im new to the whole S&W revolver world but not new to firearms in general. Have had a few Taurus 44's over the years. Pretty much couldn't afford Smith's. I plan to shoot mostly specials in this piece because I have heard a steady diet of magnums may make it loose. I do have 1 other question from my wife though. How does one stop walking around the house asking the cats and inanimate objects if they feel lucky? 😁

I would shoot it lightly, clean it often and keep it locked up. It might get lonely so I would get it some friends like a 10,15, 27, 57, 58 66, 629, 686.

I know the doubt you are feeling. I have an earlier S serial # that I feel the same way.

I shoot all my "collectible" guns. But since it has a turn line, I'd say go ahead and shoot it. Clean it gently and you won't really affect condition anyway. It not like it's NIB.

I am by no means a collector. Generally, if I own something it gets used. I just don't want to necessarily "de- value, ruin"such a nice piece of history if it was really collectable or rare. I wasn't sure really how common or uncommon the gun is. As far as losing value, I don't intend to sell it so that doesn't really matter to me. I was curious on value simply because I wanted to know if I paid a fair price. ($900 cash along with a Howa 30-06).

Welcome to the Forum from Virginia,

Don't know where you live in the States, but "value" is a perceived term anyway meaning if you are happy with the price and trade, then you are good to go.

I believe all the Smith's will continue to rise, some less than others, some a lot less than others, but rise they do in my experience.

You do have a "oddity" I'll call it more than any rarity, or scarcity in that your presentation case has the gun pointing to the right, not left as most all Model 29's I've seen. These were only a couple years as I understand it (1980-1981). Another thing is that your liner appears stippled, rather than trace evidence of the blue flocking that used to be present in mine, so maybe the factory changed to your style and you have 100% original.

My Model 29-2 is a 1980 gun, in 95-97% condition, has been shot (and will continue to get exercised....when ever my hand can take a couple cylinders of full house maggies!).

Like RCT said..........it is collectible to you, but a fun shooter too, and I don't think any of us are into Smith's (or any guns) for purely investment gain, as that would be a very long haul, but provided you are happy with price paid....they remain a very fun hobby/recreation....and since they are not made anymore, anywhere like these old timers...you do have a very nice chunk of history in your hands.

Nice find and a very good gun to make your introduction to the Forum......stick around and we are all experts at helping you spend your money.

Thank you. My box was flocked. I have since cleaned it out. It was full of the stuff. The foam in the lid is actually reversed so you can't see the nasty side. On the insert, the edges that are down in the box still had some on it as well that I cleaned off. The stuff was everyone. And all over the gun. I plan to redo the box come summer when I can be outside. (NW PA is cold right now.)

To me, it all comes down to what you mean by collect. If you have other 44 magnum guns you shoot already, nothing wrong with putting away and pulling out to ogle at occasionally. As others have suggested, the value will likely increase over time. Also, I would argue it’s a good place to start for an entry level collector. It becomes an addiction and you can always use as currency to improve your collection over the years.

Is it actually a 6" or is it a 6 1/2"? There were a lot fewer of the 6" Model 29-2's produced. Most prefer the longer barrel cause it was the Dirty Harry gun. Here's my 6" Nickel that I stupidly let get away!

It's a fine looking gun for any collection. I shoot my collection of guns. To me a safe queen isn't worth squat just sitting in a safe so it can stay pristine. The purpose of a gun is to be shot not sit in the darkness of a safe.
You show it to someone and they ask how does it shoot. You say I have no idea but it sure is pristine LNIB isn't it. I had two guns, had never been shot still in the OEM box and the other looked like it only had been factory test shot. I had figured on keeping both never shot as safe queens. The queens were beheaded so to speak. Actually one gun, the more expensive one, was a bit of a disappointment as a shooter. It didn't live up to the hype expectations. LOL I should have left it as a safe queen then it's appeal wouldn't have been tarnished.

I have one just like yours only no case. I shoot it quite a bit. I even have been known to carry it around the ranch in an El Paso holster. Mine gets nothing but magnum rounds, and is still as tight as the day I brought it home.

Use it and enjoy it!

You recently picked it up and you want to know the value? Did you steal it? If you paid for it that's probably about what it's worth.

The 6" barrel was used the last couple years on the 29-2 and some find it less desirable than the 6.5". Not a rare gun and not in pristine condition so no crowd of collectors clamoring for it. Preserve it for another 50 years and it will be a sought after antique.

Stocks are pretty.

It measures 5 and 7/8's from the end of the cylinder to the end of the barrel so 6". This is the only 44 I currently own. I have decided I am going to shoot it and take care of it. It may even find its way bear hunting once in awhile. My thought on anything has always been to use it but this one had me second guessing my self. Anyway, headed out to put some rounds through it this weekend.

DMF85, the cats don't care if you feel lucky. They know they are.

Nice find! Shoot it with pride.

My first LGS had every n frame new on sale for $699 in blue, stainless or that s&w world famous nickel finish. Breakout the plastic. But another dealer had a m29 that I had no intention of buying a s&w m29 6.5”; bbl but my LGS/dealer took in a nib unshot m29-10 with blue case and the wooden presentation case which he put up for sale for $699 how could I pass that up in blue? Silly prices I was finally in the right place at the right time. Just browsing for a 41 mag because I couldn’t find a Redhawk I settle for the m57 & m58. With my mad money in hand.

Also any info would be appreciated. Thanks
ALL SMITHS ARE shooters.....That's why they are made.....Then your choice what you do with it. Throwing it in a box in the safe is worse waste of time and money there is.
