A lot depends on who did the engraving. Any idea? Your picture isn't big enough to see much detail and doesn't blow up very well so it's hard to tell. From what little I can see it looks like a decent job.

I suspect it is factory due to the logo being on the left side. The 5" barrel is also popular. I can take a guess but that's all it would be. Gun alone (and it really needs to be lettered) I would say around $2,000. But I am often accused of undervaluing guns.

Probably factory, possibly Freyburger. Would love to see more detail.
$3K or so if it letters. Grip finish looks like it has some cracking issues.
This is a Freyburger 27-2

bigtubby....For $50 you can send for a factory letter on a S&W firearm. The firearm is researched by Roy Jinks, S&W's Historian, who then sends you a letter with the general history of your model of S&W and confirms (or does not confirm) the characteristics of your particular gun. In your case, the letter would most likely confirm the Class A-engraving, the barrel length and finish of your 27-2 and would tell you when and where it was shipped. If the 27-2 was shipped as a plain revolver, the letter would state that.
Often, guns with special features, such as engraving or unusual barrel lengths are lettered to confirm the features in order to make them more marketable.
I think you can access the factory letter request form by clicking on Downloads and going on from there.

bigtubby....I would like to see a picture of the side plate. Guns were being contract engraved and in-house engraved when I think your 27-2 was done. If it is contract engraved it is worth less than if an in-house engraver did the work. Both contract and in-house guns will letter as engraved, but the value is different.

Thanks for the picture. I may be wrong, but I believe the 27-2 is one of the contract engraved guns (many were during this time). I would value it at around $1650 to $1850.
