Boys I've seen some real "winners" over the years but, if this is a serious post, perhaps the OP needs to look into knives, clubs,or....water guns?I'm not sure I want this guy wandering around my range [or on the street]carrying a dangerous weapon. No offense intended but some folks should not carry a gun. You can call me what you want, I am a very competent person, but guns are still new to me. This is a gun I was looking to buy, but when I saw this it made me ask the question, I have only seen "stamped" serial numbers from what little experience I have.

If you don't mind answer the question, if not stay silent!

In a word "NO" I still don't understand the question! I don't think that serial # was etched!

The serial number is always on the bottom of the butt frame.

It can be elsewhere as well. If necessary, remove the stocks to see what is stamped on the butt. The number shown looks legitimate for an M29-2, and would place year of manufacture at about 1980.

Wow! I did not see that second picture! The numbers sure look wallowed out. Check the butt frame.

I don't have the gun, I'm not really questioning the number itself, to me it looks welded and not stamped if that is even possible.

I can see where you are getting that impression, especially from the second picture. Rest assured, it was stamped by hand.

That second picture reminds me of a lot of bear tracks I have sen pictures of that were taken of the tracks in wet sand in Alaska. Many time they actually look raised instead of imprinted.

Default Legit S/N ?

parrisjr, opinion only but it appears the number stamps are not sharp and even disfigured, blunted or something. I suggest that the time to replace the stamps has come & gone. Sure hope the numbers on the butt frame are neater and applied with a little more pride in workmanship.

Has this gun been refinished and perhaps "re-stamped"? How did the rest of the markings on the barrel, frame (right side) and left side look? I have seen some sloppy stampings on some guns before. Yes, you need to check the frame after removing the stocks. Kyle

I have a number of 29-2s and other N-frames from that era.
None of them have stampings that look that way.
And, the background looks to have been crudely filed on. None of my guns have that appearance there, either.
I would walk away from that one.
Who knows what other skeletons might be in THAT one.

-My $0.03, YMMV.

The only thing that matters is what the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame looks like. That's the only one that counts.

I'm with arjay. close up and blown up distorts things a bit. If it matches the butt, no problem. Sorry for the way you were "greeted" and welcome to the Smith and Wesson forum.
