Default Presentation Case Question

Did S&W ever use a wood presentation case without the dovetail joints on the edges other than the current ones they have with the emblem on top.

I have one for a 6 1/2" gun with mid-70's inserts that has nothing embossed on the lid but also has no dovetail joints.
Just wondering.
Craig...

I looked at the cases I have and all have dovetail joints. However, S&W did try different cases from time to time so yours could be original. The cases were built in S&W carpenter shop, so someone could have tried this out as an experiment. It is anyone's guess.

It appears as though the inserts have been reflocked, so the case could be the result of an individual collector's efforts.

Thanks Bill,
I reflocked the case several months ago. I bought a 29-2 earlier this year and it was in this box. The previous owner was not the original owner and didn't know if the case originally came with the gun. The liners fit perfectly though.
Thanks for taking the time to look at yours.

Default Corners!

I have restored many cases for collectors and during that endeavor I have found two cases with corner joints other than the finger jointed!

These pictures are of the lap type joint I have seen. Both cases had the 1979-1983 type liners(small tool compartment).
dnonac, the picture you posted has 45 deg corners which is common on more modern cases generally used with special guns. Also you will notice the wood is thicker and the latch is installed with small screws. All the Mahogany cases of the 1960-1983 period used thin wood which required they use a rivet type fasterner for the hardware. As you stated the liners fit perfectly so the case you have could have been an experimental case that never made it to production.

Joe...I was hoping you would chime in since I figure you've seen just about every variety of these cases.

Between you and Bill, well let's just say you guys probably haven't missed too many limited run boxes.

My first thought was that someone had converted an old jewelry box .......but the liner fit and the the exterior wood sure makes me think it's a S&W case. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Thanks for the Info.

Craig

The flocking I use is 0.03" cut rayon and I get it online at a place called craftflocking dot com. I believe I order Royal Blue.
