Default 27-2 Correct Grips?

Today, at a Gun Show, I picked up a 27-2. The seller kept saying it was a 1972 but I knew from the "S" serial number that it was older than that. The SCSW dates this gun at 1964-1965 (S239XXX). The gun is in great condition 98%, came with an early 80's box and checkered target stocks with a date of 1992 on the inside of them. My question for the group, what would the proper grip for a 1964-65 27-2 be? Would it have the diamond center? It should not have the speed loader (football cut) correct? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

They would have the diamond center. A 3.5", probably Magnas; any other barrel length, most likely (but not always) Targets with the football (extractor) cutout. These were made after about 1953 until the mid-1980s, when the wider (speedloader) cutout began.

The grips had diamonds up till '68. I believe this gun could have come with magnas, not target grips, but I'm not sure. The football cut and speed loader cut are not the same thing. The football cut came about first and it provided extra clearance for extracting shells. The speed loader cut came later (late 70s or early 80s) and was a more drastic cut.

All 27-2's came with magnas until about '75. You could order them with target stocks, but magnas were the standard issue stocks. They would have had the diamond center up until late '67-early '68.
