Value of NYSP Model 520
What is the current value of a Model 520, new in box, box is marked NYSP, is numbered to the gun and has all paperwork and tools? Thanks.

That's about right. Saw a similar one recently for $1000.
I got mine for under $800 and have been smiling ever since.

"Paperwork and tools?" What papers and tools does the seller claim are with the revolver?

An unopened plastic wrapped package of cleaning rod and bore brush, as well as S&W brochure. I did not see a warranty card but then I did not pay close attention to what was on the bottom of the box.

Last edition of Standard Catalog Of S&W by Supica and Nahas lists the 520 NIB at $1000.00 and that was a few years ago. I've been seeing them on the auction sites for more, some for less. But I think a grand is probably the ballpark number.
Cheers;

I just picked up my new/old 520
And one of the things I found with the gun was a copy of a letter from S&W, signed by David G. Simons, Vice President, Sales, dated May 9, 1980, which detailed the history of these guns. The letter is to "All Smith & Wesson Handgun Distributors" and the subject is "SMITH & WESSON MODEL 520 Revolver." Interesting tidbit, each distributor was limited to ordering no more than 100 units.
Has anyone seen this before or do I have something unusual?
For some reason I can't upload my .pdf of this letter to Photobucket, but if anyone wants a copy of it, just contact me at [email protected]. I'll send it along via email.

Almost all 520 owners, like me, have a copy if that letter. It has been circulating around for quite some time. They are handy to have though, it gives you a bit of provenance.

Great shooters in addition to being somewhat rare and certainly one of a kind. They will never be made again for the NYSP. I like the letter and the fact that they are not engraved or marked for the NYSP.

I looked for a NIB model 520 for close to year and ended up paying an even thousand for it. I wouldn't let it go for less than $1200.

Serial Number Check
I have another 520, this one customized by Bowen, which has serial number N5576XX. I understand this is outside the NYSP serial number range. If that's true, did S&W make these other 520s for other police customers, or for sale to the civilian market? And if so how many 520s were made outside of the 3000 made for NYSP?
