I bought this one for my Dad for our deer hunting adventures….

I bought one for me to have fun…

Then another…. "loud is an understatement"

Then one that I liked….

I am the original owner of a 19-4 purchased in early 1981. No pix but it is still a beauty. I still shoot it too.

I bought a new 29-2 after watching some Clint Eastwood movie. I also bought, at another time a new 19-5 2.5" round but. That little snubby is my favorite!

I purchased my first S&W in 1978. It was a brand new pinned, recessed model 29-2
with an 8 3/8 barrel. It is nickel plated with the original deluxe wooden presentation
box, papers, etc. I've shot several thousand rounds through it over the years and
carried it for hunting. Still one of my favorites (and I have added many since then).

I still have it, in fact just took it out of the safe to polish it up and clean
it a few days ago.

I had been in Africa 1949, came home, bought this K-22 with intent taking it back to Africa with me. I went, it didn't, I took a .38 Special instead.

Ivory grips are from a batch I had made in Africa 1950 for $6/pr. Snake is my DIY sometime later.

This is my 19-4 I bought in 82. Carried it in an LE job under a sportcoat for 10 years. Put 50,000 rounds through it and used it to teach LE firearms. Difference in use and abuse.

My very first revolver and still with me is the first iteration of the stainless S&W Model 67 38 Special.

Old but cool thread. I still have my 4" model 34-1, from near the end of the P & R era.

Since "pinned and recessed" began in the early-mid 1930s (.22/32s and Registered Magnums), I expect we won't be seeing a post from anyone from the P & R "and earlier" era who bought theirs new .

Default My Very First

I still own (and shoot) my very first firearm, a P&R Model 35-1. It was purchased new by my dad for me from Jesse Harpe's shop in Tampa in the early 60s. I was all of 5 years old, but my dad was a very patient instructor.

I bought this Model 25-2 brand new around 1983. The dealer had it since 1979. It has a spare cylinder chambered for 45 Colt.

My, my..... Still a couple of members reading and contributing to this thread..

I believe the replies to the thread predictably revealed, to many of us, a life-long appreciation and special attachment many members of this forum have for the S&W family of fine firearms.

I hope many young people purchasing them currently will be able to have the same pride of ownership 60 or 70 years from now, expressed by so many on this thread, reflecting that pride in the ownership and freedoms S&W firearms have helped us preserve today.

LONG LIVE S&W AND OUR SECOND AMENDMENT!!

I have a P&R Model 66 that I bought new in 1980 to carry as a duty gun. I have several other P&R guns but that is the only one I have had since new.

While I am not technically the original owner this Model 36 has been in the family since 1968. My father purchased this from our local gun store. My father wanted a square butt and had to order it. The gun came in on Christmas Eve 1968 and we got to the just in time. I ended up carrying this gun a lot after I got my LTC.

While my father cut corners on the holster and bought a Hunter I upgraded to some thing better. I few years ago I found a nice Bianchi thumbtack at a gun show and that’s what it travels in now.

That is a nice gun that you have. Also glad to hear that you changed your mind about a refinish.

These are great little guns. I also have 2 round butt 2” model 36s and an a first model.

That S&Ws that I bought new and still have are a model 18-3 since 1972, a model 27-2 1973 and a model 34-1 since 1978.

When I came back to the US after a three year tour in Germany, I bought a S&W Model 15-4 in 1981. It has a pinned barrel but not a recessed cylinder. My oldest S&W revolver is a 1962-vintage model 28-2 that I bought a couple of years ago. It is P&R but doesn't have the original grips.

Technically I am not the original owner. This model 36 has been in the family since 1968. It was purchased by my father in 1968. I went with him when he went shopping for a 2” barrel .38. After looking around he decided on a 2” square butt model 36. Our local gun store did not have a square butt in stock so he had to order one. The dealer recieved the gun on Christmas Eve 1968 and we were able to get to the dealer in time to pick it up that day.

I fired this gun a lot and carried it frequently after I got my LTC.
These are great little guns. Mine has lots of memories attached as I am sure that yours does. Glad to hear that you changed your mind on a refinish.

In 1971 I purchased new Model 17-3 K-22 for $110. It is nicely holster worn and has shot thousands of rounds. Still shoots great and is used often.

Back around 1980 I came home to NH for a visit. I was stationed at USCGAS Sitka, AK on HH3F rescue helicopters as a SAR flight mechanic. Anyway I visited a local gun shop and found 4” & 8” 629s. I had only read about the 6” new model 629 in the gun rags. I bought them and returned to Sitka. I ended up selling the 8” to a CG pilot for enough to nearly pay for both. Most of us carried handguns either in shoulder holsters or in our kit bags in case a survival situation happened. I carried it for many years while in Sitka and later stationed at CGAS Kodiak. I used it for a hunting, fishing and camping sidearm during those years. I still have it and have added back an 8” as well as a 6” P&R’d 629s.

Sorry- I was about 6 when the last regular P&R's were produced in Springfield. I didn't buy first new S&W until 1998 at age 22.

My first new Large frame S&W was bought in 1967 in Fairbanks. M-57 4 inch. with all the target stuff. Used it guiding hunters. Sold it in 1969 When I had to drive the Alcan through Canada. Bought the same gun back at a little Gun Show here in Wy..2007...from the fellow I sold it to. Not going ANYWHERE. I also have a 27-2 3 1/2 inch I bought my 2nd year in business as a FFL. 1971 carried a little in a shoulder rig. Just too much to carry

My first was a 13-2 357 mag bought new at 18 in 1974.Still have it. I would have preferred a 44 mag but Dirty Harry priced them out of my price range.

I bought Roscoe in the early seventies; first owner and still have it. That was the first of my Model 14s: a Model 14-3.

I gave it to the wife to put near her side of the bed. She said I gave it to her. Grabbed me a 14-4 and never slowed down.

My first collection for the new guys, as have shown this years ago, was a Pre-Model 14, Model 14, and dash one through dash 7. Still have them all.

Before I learned how awesome the S&W revolvers were I bought a Colt Python. This was 1976, I learned shortly thereafter the beauty of the S&W's. Great looking guns, far superior action and 2/3rds the price in a lot of cases especially back then. My Python was $335 out the door, a model 66 or 19, even a 27 or 28 could have been bought for significantly less maybe less the $200. By the way I still have the 6" Royal Blue Python.

My K-22 Masterpiece shipped to (Columbus) Ohio a few days before I was born in 1952. This is just speculation buy my theory is that my father or grandfather bought it for me when I was born but it somehow went missing before I was old enough to receive it. I was re-united with it about 10 years ago while searching for a birth year K-22. Of course this is total speculation with no facts to back it up other than the ship date and destination. No one left alive to confirm. so MAYBE?

A 15 and a 34, pre-1980. Sorry about the crummy pics. What's the cut-off date for P&R? (See? I did make a few good decisions, back in my younger days.)
