Talked my brother into buying this 28-2
I saw this 28-2 at a small gun shop near my brother's house a few months ago. I am visiting him and doing a little hunting. It was horrible windy today, and since neither one of us can stand hunting in the wind, we visited gun shops. To my surprise the 28-2 was still on the shelf. Now I already have two 28-2s, but have been thinking about this one since I first saw it. Luckly my brother bought it and took away the temptation.
The only real mark to speak of, is at the muzzle on the right side, a small rub mark about half the size of a BB. There is a very light drag line on the cylinder and no flame cutting. The original finish is super nice, with no frckles or thinning. Someone replaced the trigger with a target trigger polished smooth, but must have known what they were doing,as the side plate was not pryed off and the screws not buggered. The timing and lock up are great.
OK, now make me look good. I told him $400 was a good deal and that the target grips were probably worth around $80.

OH, The serial number would make it a 1978 year of manufacture.

If I were in the market for a Highway Patrolman, I'd have paid $400 for that one, easy. And you are right, the grips are worth $80, but I wouldn't break up the set unless I were putting magnas back on it.

I would have paid $400 for that with no problem!
The target grips being worth $80, well you would have to find the right buyer, EBay is littered with N-frame Targets from $50-100 but I would guess they eventually find a buyer.

The four inch barrel and target stocks do add something to the value. That would have been a good deal for a six incher with rubber grips in that condition.
Some of those did come with targets.

I'd say that $400 is a bit below market price. I paid $499 recently for my 28-2 6" and I don't think that was a bad deal.

That was a good grab at 400! I paid that for one a bit older and alot more worn with horrible grips! LOL Its one of my favorite N frame 357's though, what a shooter. Enjoy!

Nice looking Highway Patrolman. It's pretty tough to beat a 4 inch N frame and priced at $400.00 that gun will make a nice inexpensive shooter.

Thanks guys, your positive responses earned me a steak dinner, even though I had to do the grilling.

Erp... I just put money down on the lay away of a 28 for $500. It has some ill fitting Pachmayr grips that are history as soon as I can get something better. You Sir, made a fine find.

I just bought off this forums "for sale adds" a model 28-2 that was sent to SW for a high polish blue, timing redone,BBL turned and target grips for 575 shipped. It was sitting on this board for months. I cant believe you guys didnt buy it. I dont know if it is because he got rid of the matt blue with polish blue but it is like a 27-2 in 4 inch BBL without the checkering top strap. The gun shoots great. I think it is worth every penny.
Good luck with your 28-2 great gun.

the 28-2 has been on my list for quite sometime. if I could get one like that for 400 I would wait no longer. I have the magnas and tyler t-grip so even if i get stuck with one wearing cheap pachs I will still take it gladly for that price and condition. very good find and it gives the rest of us hope that soon we can check the 28-2 off the want list.

I just finished a month long search for a 28-2 4" all over the net, and I would say you did very well. A great piece that actually showed some increase in value while I watched it. I would speculate that 4 and 5 hundred buck 28-2's are soon to be mighty scarce. The "investors" that have migrated from other fields ofinterest are pushing prices up, along with the other usuall factors that influence the appreciation of vintage Smiths and other fine hog legs of yesteryear. Get 'em while you can! flapjack.
