This may be an odd question but does anyone know why some pachmeyers have the brass logo and some do not? I have an N frame pair I bought in the early 80's and they have no medallion. I just picked up an early 70's n frame with "small" presentation grips on it and they have the logo and appear to have been on the weapon awhile. Was the medallion an option or can it maybe tell what era the grips are from. I tried googling it but I come up blank. I generally don't like goodyears on a smith but if they were put on a police marked gun and are age appropriate for the gun it doesn't bother me. Lets use the Schofield analogy. Non original period grips put on by a my counterpart in 1890 after purchase? Replace them. Crappy homemade grips put on by a Wyoming peace officer in 1890? Keep them. I am a bit inconsistant there I know.

My guess would be they are later or were made up,, often see Colts , with medallions in the grips, and have seen 'non' Pachmayr grips ,like Hogues or Uncle Mikes again, these are much later, and they are either molded ( logo ) or plain, but the 'Pachs" from back then I doubt it, thats almost 'pre' Gripper era from what we recall, but then again, NEVER say never, who knows S&W may have tried or contracted with the grip company to make up something "special" would have to "see' the grips and just 'how' the medallions are actually installed...I know LOTS of guys who have done this, ala aftermarket, and some look pretty good, and serve the purpose,BUT is it a "factory offering" of the time, me thinks not, I've just NEVER seen them that way,in the early ,mid 70's, and we did LOTS of 'smiths back then.................any pictures?

I am sorry Dant, I wasn't clear, I mean the grips had the pachmyar logo of the lion, not a smith logo.

I have (had) several of the pre-medallion Pachmayr presentation grips. I purchased them in the late 1970s and early 1980s when I was doing a lot of silhouette shooting. As a matter of fact, I finally got around to listing them in the classifieds and still a couple of them are still unsold.

Thanks. you answered my question. Medallions came later. If these pachs were of the era when this 29-2 were made I was going to leave them on. Now that I know they are not I am free to put them on a 629-3 and put my vintage altered (see pic) n frame targets I have had for 35 years.. There is no collector value in them but they sure feel better than the unaltered factory targets and their condition matches my PD m29-2's condition as well.

yes, that is exactly what they are, the medallions were added, we were told in preparation of putting "manufacturers" logos, ( ergo Colt) on guns grips made for that company, much like the Sile company also did on their wood grips made back then, put a little silver eagle medallion on them, and they could easily be swapped out..............the grip companies were always trying to "hustle a buck", can't blame them, LOTS of the Colts had them and also some of the Ruger target grips......as I said above, I have never seen them with' S&W,' aside from "home-made" versions.........
looking at your picture, MANY 'PDs' put on and used the 'Pachmayr' rubber grips ,so would stand to reason..........held up better than the wood grips.........LOTS of folks like ;'em for shooting, they do work, and have sold TONS of them over the years.........

The Pachmayr Presentation design is my favorite "after-market" grip. Just seems to fit my hand better than any other design. The Pachmayr Compac would have to be a close second.

18-2 in box for a sweet 44mag not sure if that 18-2 shoots long or short?

Hey unckie, Why don't you check out the "guns for sale" forum here. An 18-4 just went on the board yesterday for $850.:) Isn't it enough that I bird dog these great deals for you and Big E?:D What did you pay your 18-2 LNIB by the by?
