Cool Gunning Wholesale Sporting Goods, Wichita KS?

I purchased a revolver 2 miles from my house that belonged to a former Seattle Homicide Detective. I assumed he purchased it from a local Smith & Wesson retailer. I received a slight disappointment today when the letter said it shipped on August 3rd 1962 to Gunning's in Wichita.

Can anybody tell me about the history of that business?

Thanks, Notime2

Gunning Wholesale was a local firearms wholesaler in Wichita through the mid 1980's. They did not sell to the public. I don't recall when they went out of business.

Wasn't it an allowed practice back in the 50's and 60's for a wholesaler to sell and ship to a PD with an order on offical PD letterhead? Also an officer or Detective could purchase a weapon in this manner as long as it was shipped to the PD IIRC.
