2nd Nickle Smith joins the club...
My wife and I had two tables at the Birch Run, MI gun show this weekend and I fared pretty well in the sales department that I bought a few new guns for my collection.
In addition to a Walther TPH and a Kahr P9 I bought two Smith and Wesson handguns; a nice (but filthy inside) Model 469 9mm with two magazines for $300 and a Model 58 4" Nickle .41 Magnum. No box for either of the S&Ws but I did manage to get the folded IPB, information, and operations paper that came with the Model 58.
As the title says this is my second nickle plated S&W; the other is a 6" barreled Model 29-2/3. I say 2/3 because it is stamped -2 but the 2 is overstamped with a 3.
Here is a picture of the Model 58 and the Model 29:
The Model 58 was $700; the 29 I traded a rifle I paid $200 for it.

My neighbor asked me to go with him to that show early Sat. morning, but I had other plans. Probably a good thing for you, since you'd be looking at my post with that gun right now.

Got to Love a Nickle Smith. I just picked up a 4" 29-2 with it's wood case. Beautiful guns!

"IPB" - Now there's an abbreviation I haven't heard in a lot of years! Kind of reminds me of things like "SLTG" and "CG-272". Thanks for the memories!
Oh, and congrats on your new acquisitions.

Now a days they call it COMDTINST 8000.2 Series and that old line throwing gun has been replaced by shooting a blank load in an M16...long gone are the .45-70 and .30 cal SLTGs...
Here's a fun one for you tinman - in 1981 I was issued a S&W Model 41 by the 9th District Armorer so I could go shoot in the Cuyahoga (Cleveland) County Bullseye League!

Yep, I'm an "old Coastie". 20 years was all the fun I could stand.
That was interesting you were issued the Model 41. I figured after the "purge" of 1973 (when all "non-standard") firearms were supposed to be returned to Brooklyn for disposal/destruction, that the Ruger 678 would have been the only .22 pistols left in inventory.
I was stationed in Seattle in 1967 and was issued a Remington 40X, shooting jacket, spotting scope, etc for shooting on the local small-bore rifle team. We shot at the Seattle Police Athletics Association range. The SPAA had a small store on-site, and sold reloading supplies, ammo, etc. Active duty military were allowed to join and use the range.
My, how times have changed!

A Serial Number Question
This Model 58 has one number stamped on the butt, N543xx; and two matching numbers, on the grip portion of the frame and on the cylinder crane: 781xx. So is the N number the serial number or is it a property number?

The serial is the one on the bottom of the grip frame, and it is the number that has the N at the front of it. The others are assembly numbers.

A triple nickle
I got all three of my S&W Nickles together; the Model 29-2/3, the 58, and this Model 1-1/2 .32 Short centerfire. I've shot it; its a nice little popper...
