Thanks LOL
Like I've said before, the most expensive forum I ever joined.
I just ordered 500 new brass casings this morning and now another 250 rounds.
I need to get out of here while I still have food in the cupboards.
Everywhere else I looked .41 mag are $1 each and up so thanks for the link.

Went shooting yesterday. I discovered the sight on my beloved Mountain Gun had been bumped to the extent I was hitting a few inches to the right at twenty yards.
In the meantime I figured out the hold on the 58 and destroyed the center of the target. So... the Model 58 wins the day....

I mentioned earlier that I planed to have a .45 Colt built out of it by adding a 6-1/2 inch 1955 Target barrel, the cylinder re-chambered and the top strap milled for S&W's adjustable rear sight. You couldn't buy a D.A. .45 Colt made by S&W at the time. Luckily, the .45 Colt M-25-3 was introduced a bit afterward, and I kept the M-58 the was it was.
I became a deputy sheriff in 1981. Our issue gun was the .38 Special Model 15, but you could provide your own S&W, Colt or Ruger in .38 or .357 if you wanted. While the K-frame Models 19 and 66 were the most popular choice, quite a few deputies carried the Model 28 Highway Patrolman, just as big and heavy a gun as the M-58. The captain over the detective division carried a 6-1/2 inch Model 27.
After a year or two, several of us who followed the officer survival movement began trying to convince the Sheriff and the administration to allow us to carry bigger bore revolvers. S&W was then making suitable guns in .44 Special, .45 Colt, .45 ACP, .44 Magnum and, of course, .41 Magnum. More importantly, Winchester, Federal and Remington were making ammunition in these calibers suitable for law enforcement, such as the Silvertips, and lead hollow point semiwadcutters. The department armorer was already trained to maintain the N frame, so that wasn't a hurdle. We proposed that deputies carrying anything other than .38 or .357 would be obligated to provide our own qualification and duty ammo, subject to any specification the department might issue. Nobody wanted to carry .41 and .44 Magnum full-charge hunting ammunition.
The armorer/firearms instructor for the department would put on practice shoots on Wednesday afternoons. One Wednesday, I took my Model 58, a .44 Special Model 24-3 and a .45 Colt Model 25-5 to the shoot, with appropriate ammo. Our 50 round course of qualification was fairly easy and I had time to shoot it twice, using the .41 and the .45, while a pal shot my .44 Special. We all shot perfect scores.
We had hoped our demonstration would get the armorer behind our proposal; if nothing else, it would save the department the cost of the ammo that big bore adoptees would otherwise shoot.
Our plan went nowhere.
My standard mid-range .41 Magnum reload was a cast 212 grain SWC over 8.0 grains of Unique. Sometimes I loaded and shot Speer's 3/4 jacketed 200 grain hollow point or 220 grain soft point. Those were excellent bullets. I also loaded various 210 grain jacketed hollow points over a full charge of H-2400 or W-296.
I never was able to qualify with and carry any of the .40+ caliber guns, but one winter, mebbe 2 winters, I packed the Model 58 in a shoulder holster under my winter duty coat to finish off injured deer hit by vehicles. There was also a horse (the owner wanted it euthanized after it was hit by a truck) and a very large cow Shiras moose. The full power handloads put their slugs right through the horse and moose skulls.
I was NOT asked to finish off the two heavily damaged trucks that hit them.
Skeeter Skelton was somewhat involved in getting the .41 Magnum produced. He wrote that he, Bill Jordan and Elmer Keith envisioned a .40 or .41 caliber cartridge housed in a frame sized in between the large N frame and the smaller K frame, perhaps the size and heft of the L frame Model 686 produced 20 years later. But that was a bit too financially weighty for the times. So, S&W used what they had.
I need to dig my M-58 out of the safe and go shoot it. It's probably been 20 years since it roared.

Here's BUFF's M58. It will be roaring again pretty soon.
I LOVE reading his old posts.

Model 58
A recent pickup from the last Gun show.I wanted a S&W .41 Magnum 4",but was on the fence about either a 57 or 58.I was leaning more toward the 58,so I settled for this one.I never see the .41 Mag.other than online,so the time to get one is when you find one.A shooter for sure! It`s not Factory nickel, and previous owner wanted an adjustable rear sight!

cbfd, hope the adjustable sight will go low enough for that short front sight? If it does it's good to go. Nice pickup.

I had a new ‘75 colt python that shot high at 25 yds. I took it out to 100yds and was pinging small rocks on the berm. I left it sighted in for the distance I just aimed lower at shorter distances.

An interesting compromise. It will probably shoot just fine, as is.
Welcome to the “club”. Will be interested in a range report.

Sent these to a member via PM but figured I'd post em up here for conversation/educational purposes. I'm itching pretty bad to join the 58 club. Been shopping for months, probably gonna continue shopping for a while longer still. Came across this one in its original box and got curious about the roll/punch marks.
Anyone got any additional info? My original guess was it's a German gun of some kind. Would love to know more.

Does look like German proofs and brought back to the US by TAI in Minot ND. During the times I was in Germany, Smith sold lots of revolvers there.

Well, it is now official - my really nice 58 did NOT come from the factory with Target Stocks, Target Trigger, and Target Hammer - it shipped July 24, 1967 in standard form to Olympic Wholesale in Los Angeles, and the extras were added later.
I also did not know the original run of M58s was 20,287 units.
That was a well-spent $75, IMO.

Yes, S295***. It's really nice and spent it's time from the late 70s to 2015 in an elderly friend's safe. I paid him a little too much, but I didn't mind - it's really nice w/box and he's a good friend.

That's awesome and I'd have to agree with you that you didn't pay too much.
You are both happy and that's what makes a good deal.
Good on you.

I took the stocks off for the first time this morning to clean the gun after taking it to the range last week.
Who might have written the number on them?? S&W? Or someone else?

Kenny,
Nice model 58!
The writing looks to be a non-factory addition. SW stamped their later stocks, and the very early had the sn penciled in.
Happy shooting!

Thank you.
Maybe someone thought they could up the value of the gun if the stocks were numbered to it. LOL!!

Don't know when they stopped stamping sn inside the grip, but I have a M58 (N271179) close to your sn and it doesn't have the number stamped inside the grip.

Thanks. I didn't think it was there from the factory but thought I'd ask.
Maybe it went in for a repair or something.

A good friend loaded another 200 rounds for me for Christmas.
So now I have 850 .41 Magnum rounds.
I only have one .41 Mag to shoot, my M58.
And here's the problem. I have an outdoor range.

I would disagree, I think your biggest problem is you don't reload for yourself?

Long ago, in a place far away from where I am now...I had a buddy who had rigged a throne at the end of his place into the perfect indoor/outdoor range/hunting blind. His throne faced a small window at just the right height to be opened a few inches, and his handgun of choice rested on the sill... depending on season, there was a deer feeder (legal where he was at), or some steel swinging plates. In any weather, he could be seated comfortably, do his business and take of bidness at the same time. I did not judge him, it suited his needs and physical limitations at the time
I bet that you and that 58 will be old pals by the time you run all those rounds down the pipe Happy shooting sir!

I'm good. I have no interest in reloading.
My friend has been doing it for about 50 years so I'll just keep letting him do it for me. He likes it.

My point was you could talor rounds to your particular handgun? Find it's sweet spot, if you will.

I seriously doubt that I'm good enough to do that.
I'm no tack driver.
I'm just happy to hit 8" paper plates at 100 ft more times than not.

It’s official!
It’s official...that I’ve now joined the unofficial 58 club. I’ve been looking for an S-serial 58 for awhile and came across this one at the Lakeland Rifle and Pistol Club gun show this morning. Asking price was $850, which seemed reasonable compared to other early specimens I’ve seen recently. I ended up trading a 57 no dash N-serial nickel 6” for it, so I think I did ok. I mean, the nickel 57 looked good in the safe, but having a solid shooter grade 58 sounded better. Here she is with her new sister, my M57 no dash S-serial 4”. The serial on the M58 is S260xxx, which should put it in early 1965.

Good trade.
I traded my 6' M57 with a few other guns for a nice pre-27 but I kept my M58.

That is a great pair! I bet you won't miss the one that you traded after a range day or two

Nice guns guys....
Have not seen a 58 for sale in any of the shops I go to here in New England in YEARS.... And less and less seem to come up for sale on the auction sites...
But I have my two so I'm happy...

Don't have one yet, but always looking, as I have a M57 6" nickel.
But anyway, a firearm auction, about 15 minutes away from me, has a M58 nickel.

I have just one , a blued model . After fire lapping the barrel to remove 2 tight spots she shoots just fine , very accurate now and no barrel lead . The usual spot , where the barrel threaded onto the frame and the 2nd , which surprised me was where the roll stamping was on the side of the barrel . I had to resize the cylinder throats a bit . It came with a set of N frame target grips , which I knew were not correct . I bought a set of N frame PC Magna's . They are very hard to find . It looks correct now . Regards Paul

I picked this one up from the FFL earlier today. Just a hint of a turn line and much cleaner than I had expected. It came with two speedloaders with 12 live rounds in them and a box of 240 grain Platinum tipped factory rounds. I basically bought the gun to get the accessories. I stuck the after market magnas on as soon as I got it home.

No sir, I am not. I have more than a handful of 41 guns from 41 Special to 414 Supermag including model 58's and a model 28 conversion to 41 Special. I did snag it because of the package.
