Drew,
Is that a 44 magnum or special?
I envision a Keith special there, but that frame should hold up to magnum loads if I recall correctly....Looks good either way.

Well boys, I finally joined the 58 club today.
A grumpy, old, round, fellow that has been holdin' tight to his for years
finally gave it up to me today, July 4th, 2011.
I traded a nice modern model 67 and $350. for it.
Total came out to $775.
It is unfired and has a box that doesn't number to the gun.
I will post pictures in this post tomorrow when I take them.
But I just wanted to post on the 4th of JULY that I finally got one, Officially!
Here are the pictures, taken this morning. My 1972 model 58,the 1980 model 57, and the 657 snuck in at
the last.
Regards

What's the fastest you have run your 210 grainers and still been really close to POA?
What was the slowest 210gr (or lighter) load that still makes POA?
I have seen some reloading threads for the 41, but I am more interested in the loads that are tailored to the 58's.
Thanks guys.

LSWC-HP...no
Specialty rounds in lead...never have seen any...
What's the fastest and still be close to POA...that is going to depend on your shooting style and distance. Out to 20 yards I never have noticed much difference between shooting a 210 JHP at 1300 fps and a LSW at 950... When one starts getting into light weight bullets, like the 170 SilverTips most 58s will shoot low...
If anyone is looking to "join the Club" (or Cult) there is a mint 58 in the box on GunBroker right now...current price is $560.00. Missing the PCs but for a nice shooter if the price is right who cares....

It is too bad that the box doesn't number to the gun...it would be interesting to see if the TT/TH came original from the factory. I have seen one or two 58s with TT/TH with their original boxes that had them listed as original.
They must have made 57s in batches at the factory....1980s is a very very common year for 57s. I have three 57s, a standard, blue Class A and a nickel Class A that were all made in 1980. I bought a 57 from a friend a few years ago and it was a 1980 also...
Bought from a friend in 1983....
Blue and Nickel Class As...also 1980s...

Allen,
I don't know how I missed your post...it must have been busy around here on that day
Anyhow....Great looking 58 and even better that you have the trio....I think that you'll be set for a short while
Superman - thanks for the info....I have found a few different molds laying about, and I look forward to working up a solid load to keep the 58 happy.
Redbos - keep your eyes open, they are out there....you could always do like I did, and post a WTB ad here on the board... both of mine were located through the kindness of our fellow forum members We have a great bunch of guys around here.
Keep em coming guys!

If you cast and want a HP, over on the CastBulletForums they have a Group Buy that is just about to close on a 210 mould that with different pins one can have a solid, round cavity HP or a PentaPoint cavity HP...

I thought I had posted this one here...
Picked up at a Michigan (Birch Run) Gun Show in January for $700. No box but the original instruction sheet.
Talked down to $700. The s/n is N543xx.

Wow! that sure is a pretty one....my old nickel 58 shows a lot of love compared to that
I'm curious, do the grips number to the gun? They look like standard Magna's and not the PC Magna's that I was expecting.
Good find!

Ok I've looked at all these photos and I am jealous.Does anyone have one for sale?I've been looking for one for 20 years .I found one ,bought it , took it home ,cleaned it and was going to load it up and shoot it.Well i put the first round in the chamber and the darn bullet went all the way threw the cylinder. Some idiot bored it out to 45 colt and the rifling was just about gone.So I took it back and got my money back .I tried calling S&W about a new cylinder and barrel .No luck.So gentlemen I'm still looking.Any help would be appreciated.

Yes , I know. I was simply wishing out loud.
But until I find a beater/donor for such a project , I'm happy to have a 4in square-butt .41 like everyone else.
This one arrived earlier this week from Handejector. I'd put it in 98%. It's got a few beauty marks , but otherwise is perfect.
Can't wait to shoot it , but that's not gonna happen till I change the grips. I can't imagine firing any of my .41 magnum loads and holding onto these Magnas. Perhaps that's why it failed as a cop sidearm?
I have a set of Ahrends cocobolo boots grips on the way. Stiil , I think this fine '58 might see a normal diet of mid-loads in those .41 Special cases I got.

Another "interesting" 58 on GunBroker. Search Smith 58 and you will see a S-prefix nickel with TH/TT/and diamond Target stocks...would be interesting to see what it lettered...
Not many 58s for sale right now...Bob

I keep having a recurring dream about buying one of the new classic models and having an action job, tyler t grip adaptor and gold bead front sight installed. Then taking it pig hunting!

Why not just buy an original? I have seen a bunch sell lately under what a new one costs....
The new ones are nice...I found a nickel in a shop, unfired, $500.00....sold it to a guy in Ca. who could not import an original without the IL...

If and when I come across a shooter grade I'll buy it, I just hate to have a collector grade gun modified. If I wasn't such a sucker for the collectors I'd buy that pinto that was listed but the guilt from shooting it would keep me up all night I think.

I found this 58 at a gun store in Phoenix several years ago. The store owner commented that he didn't know why anyone would want a fixed sight 41 mag - I was happy to take it off his hands for $350.00. It's seen some use and is not perfect but it shoots straight and still looks good to me
It originally shipped to Phoenix in 1970 (the grips are not original and I think are newer than the gun).
58 with a well used 10-8

sabre-
That is a nice gun at a great price. A few years back I picked up a 58 in similar condition for $425, and I considered myself very lucky. It was actually in the Phoenix area too!
Respectfully,

.265" service trigger.
When it's done, I will have a set of Magnas with a T-Grip or a set of Don Collins custom Boot Grips in Indian Cocobolo.
I have come back to the .41 Magnum after a hiatus of 25+ years. Good cartridge. I like mine around 950-1000 fps with a hard cast 210 grain Keith-type SWC.
I think the M58 really shines as a backpacker's or horseman's gun. Yeah, I know they're heavy, but to paraphrase Clint Smith: "A gun should be COMFORTING...not comfortable."
The power level that one can use covers a wide spectrum. For serious business, I have Speer God Dots @1200 fps. Probably too much of a good thing, but who cares.
They're wonderful guns...no matter WHO you are. You can't argue with their utility. Just my $.02!

That is a fine specimen and I really like the holster that goes with it. At today's prices, you stole it!
Yup, the store owner was right....NOBODY wants a fixed sight revolver. In the future, he can forward them all to me

You people are bad people to hang out with!
I picked this one up saturday at the Hillsville Virginia gun show. Eight bills cash and carry. It is pretty clean with a little bit of holster wear on the end of the barrel. Otherwise it is clean as a whistle. I was a little concerned at first as the barrel was pretty leaded up. Somebody was trying to send lead bullets out of it way too fast. Anyway I finally got it clean and the gun is really clean and tight. The serial # S2584XX puts it as a 1966 gun. I think that eight bills is a little high but you do not see these for sale very often. And I am not going to miss a lot of sleep over the price. I usually try to take my pictures in sunlight. However it is raining here so this is the best that I could do.

Just bought Model 58 number S256XXX at a show this past Saturday. Can somebody speculate on when it was made? Pretty honest old shooter, the blued finish has holster rash at the muzzle and around the cylinder, a few minor rust freckles here and there and the exposed backstrap is pretty raw. But is has a perfect bore and good lock-up. Period unmarked aftermarket semi-target type grips without speed loader cut. I paid $408.13 OTD from a dealer. While another .41 Magnum was on my “list” to go with my lonely Blackhawk, I was certainly not looking for a 58 nor had I honestly ever given one much thought. But I dang sure knew a gun that was going home with me when I saw it. Especially when it was on the table of a dealer I had traded with a few times before and the price on the tag was close enough to start a haggle. I can honestly say I don’t think I have ever personally laid eyes (or hands) on another 58. I have friends with 57s and 657s but nobody I know has a 58 (except me, HA!). Here are the pics:

I'm in the club. Mine is an s series blue model made in November of 1968. To say I'm a fan is mild, that gun saved my life one night, so it's safe to say we are bonded. It still gets carried in a duty holster with Speer Gold Dots.

Timber Wolf...I hope you kissed him before you left his table...it would have been the least you could do after stealing his gun....

I am new to the forum so I hope I'm doing this correctly.
I read an article about the 58 back in 97 and was smitten. A few months later I was browsing at Ray's in Dallas and I inquired if they might have a 58. Sure enough they did. I probably paid too much but I had to have it. It's still my favorite.

No, but I wouldn't have minded a hug from his daughter who took my money and handled the 4473.

Me too! But it's no wonder. Over the years S&W has had a genius for not being able to get out of their own way, in certain things. (Or at least it appears that way, to the uninformed observer. )
I would be surprised to see them add different chamberings to the re-introduced 58, even if it does seem easy for them to do - and a passing-fair idea.

Smith did make a 629 PC in .44 mag that had fixed sights and either a 3" or 2.5" bbl.

Wow! This may change my 8 3/8 extra barrel project. It was destined for addition to a Blackhawk, but this is exactly what the M58 should have been....

Count me as a member. The first M58 I shot was when I was 16-17 years ago. It was my fathers duty weapon. He like the caliber so much he bought a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Mag.
The loads he carried were Remington Police Load 210 gr SWC.
Elmer Keith intended the .41 to be 210 SWC at 1,000 ft per second. He wanted it to be call .41 Police, but magnum was the craze at the time.
The .41 is actually .40 caliber as is the 10mm. Common 10mm load is 200gr at around 1050fps. The more things change the more they remain the same!
May the .41 was not such a bad thing after all!
Yep I love my 58!!

OK, I want to be a menber of the "Unofficial Mod 58 Fan Club.
I hope Super Man does not see this post, but I know he will...
[A bit of history, we worked together for several years, and were shooting buddies and good friends, he moved away or we would still be shooting together].
Here is my 41 Mag story.
You see I am, and have always been, since the late 1960's early 1970's a 45 ACP and a 44 Mag kind of guy.
The first handgun I carried out of the Academy was a 4" blue Mod 29.
However, one day durring in service training, while at lunch, I went to the Gun Store near the Academy, and bought a Blue Mod 58, and several boxes of ammo. Some of the 210 Lead Police load, and some of the 210 full power magnum load, and a few speed loaders... All at a good price as the owner knew me well. Also beding an Elmer Keithite, I knew all about the 41 Mag.
A few days later I was at the range. Rhe Mod 58 shot great. Actually I could tell no difference in the recoil between 44 Mag loads and 41 Mags loads.
I carried full power 44 Mag loads [I practiced a lot] on duty, and found the 41 mag to be most excellent.
It waas very accurate, and I had no problem shooting 100% on the Dept Qual course with it.

So I began to use it as my off duty gun. I left my 44 Mag in my locker at the station, and carried the 41, with a few speed loaders off duty.
Then I started to use the Mod 58 as a foul weather gun on duty...
However the problem was, when I carried the 41 on duty I had to change out the dozen or so 44 Mag Speed loaders and the extra box of 50 rounds with the 41 Mag stuff. A lot of Drama...
About this time my partner saw the light, and wanted to go to a 44 Mag.
He had been carrying a 5" Mod 27. A Sheriff Deputy Budy of mine sold him a 4" Nickle Mod 29-2. This is in early 1978. So I started carrying my Nickle 4" Mod 29-2 which was 25 serial numbers different than my pardners...

So since Nickle is much more weather resistant than blue, and we were both carrying 44 Mags, I no longer carried the 41 Mag as a foul weather gun on duty.
I bought an extra hammer, fitted it to the Mod 58 and them bobbed it. I carried the Mod 58 off duty in an upside down shoulder holster, and it was one slick "piece" to draw.
The 41 Mag cartridge, reloads and Remington ammo, baised on its own ballistics is a very good cartridge, for man or beast.
[Again I hope Super Man does not see this, lol]
The Mod 58 is a sleek Duty/offduty/field duty rough usage revolver.
Also the Mod 57 wasw always offered in a 6" which is a lot handier than a 44 mag 6 1/2".
The 6 1/2" S&W's tended sometimes to be a little over 6 1/2", and the 6" N frames tended to be a little under 6", which made them a lot handier for a duty/combat revolver, IMHO.

I do wish that they had made a M&P N frame in 44 Mag back in the day.
Since I gradually became a big believer in Commonality, I sold the Mod 58 and bought a 6" Mod 29 in 44 Mag...
Super Man, has been a user of the 38 Super and the 41 Mag from WAY back in the day. Me being a 44 Mag, 45 ACP user, we do tease each other a bit...
My only "beef" with the 41 Mag, is that you cannot buy ammo at most places, and that there are not any Speer shotshells for the 41.
While I am not "Possesed" by the Aura of the 41 Mag, I have owned one, shot it a fair amount, carried it a fair amount, so I think I qualify for membership, in the "Unofficial 58 Club"...
Just do not tell Super Man...
