Somewhere in this thread I've posted these pictures before but here they are again.
Here's my M-58. I acquired it 3 years ago for just under $400.
All of this was included in the purchase price.
So I bought 500 new casings.
And a close friend loaded 400 rounds for me. I have two of these.
And I bought 250 new rounds from LAX prior to when the price of ammo skyrocketed.
Then for Christmas last year my friend loaded another 100 rounds for me.
So I ended up with about 750 rounds of .41 Magnum.
Here's the first six rounds I ever shot with my M58. This was from 100 ft.
I have no idea where the first one went.
So for now its waiting for its next trip to the range.

Mac - The early 58's with the S prefix have been bringing 800-1000 for just the gun. I don't think that the stocks came with the gun from the factory, but maybe a dealer installed them at the time of purchase???
Anyhow - the diamond targets, in good to excellent shape, will likely bring $250 all by them selves. The correct diamond magna stocks are hard to come by and sell for $150 and up in good condition.
If the gun is nickel (and original) then you can add 1-200 to the purchase price.
Good luck, and I hope that helps.

I paid $699 nib at my LGS in nickel. When he had the $699 sale. It’s the first S&W I ever shot. What a well balanced revolvers. It had the narrow grips even though they fit my hand I got the s&w combat grips on it. If your not into N frames you should be at least the 41 magnum.

I Picked up my S serial 58 with original grips and minimal wear for 850 at the beginning of the year and that was even in CA. I think I may have gotten a little luck since the seller didn’t even mention the grips or serial range in the ad. If the grips are original to the gun they should have the serial number stamped into the back side of one of the panels.

I have exactly that gun with original box, diamond walnut targets, target hammer, target trigger. I had it lettered; it did NOT come from the factory that way, but in southern California a couple of S&W distributors 'dressed up' M58s this way. Mine was $850 4 or 5 years ago, but I got it from an older friend and didn't try to negotiate.

In between the years 1982 - 1993 , my Mod. 58 served as my Tavern Protector/Defender. ( Billboard Bar 1979 thru 1993)
Being the owner and operator I could have open carried it in Pa. But I chose to keep it stashed in a good go to place . So it has sentimental value. Now it is one of the loaded house Guns.
I have used it on Exotic Game hunts. I needed a finishing shot on a Ram after a long shot with a TC/Contender. Final Medicine came from that 58 on a Wild Boar (also 1st shot from that Contender).

I couldn't remember if I had joined up in the past so I went through the thread. This thread must be ONE of the oldest and longest of this forum so it took me a while. It was worth it though. Thank you SAFireman for starting it long ago. I took a couple quick snap shots of the one I have now which I bought several years ago to replace the 58 I bought new in the '70's. Money was back then so I sold it. This one is in the N233 range and came with box et. al. My 58 from yesteryear was a great shooting gun and had every thing you needed in a serious social situation. I never carried it. I had my 66-1 and M-38 for that.
Pics are not too sharp, but here it is. The big brother of the M-13.

I been using the 2400 powder in my magnum loads. The 296 is too hot and can cause flame cutting in the throat I read here. I loaded some leadcast in new starline brass using unique powder. I need to work up a load for 210gr jhp.

I've been a member for a long time too
I was a member of the "41 Mag" club before I joined the "58" club. I found this one S260XXX at a local LGS for $200 a few years ago. It had a lot of holster wear but didn't look like it had been shot much. I didn't buy it when I first saw it, had to think about it for a week. When I went back I found that he had re-Blued it. AAURGH! and it had a pair up ugly-Pacs on it. I figured it was still worth $200 for a good "Carry in the woods" when I went walking gun. I replaced the Pacs with this set of stocks I had in the drawer, I had picked them up at a yard sale for $10.
Since Starline started making 41 Special brass that is what I shoot the most.

Actually, there's nothing the .44 can do that the .41 Magnum can't with about 20% less recoil and a flatter trajectory.
I oughta know...I own more than one! But mine are 57s.
I concur there is no good reason for the Model 10 on steroids. A .41 mag with fixed sights and small grips was kind of a nutty idea. But people like them. Ah well!

When looking for a very common shoot all day load using 210 gr bullets , 8.0 grs of Unique is a favorite of many 41 magnum shooters . My favorite is 8.5 grs of Winchester Super Field , using same bullet . Regards Paul

$200 bucks was a steal either way....and the stocks were too. Welcome!

SUPERMAN: The 57 and 58 were very popular with the Detroit cops I worked with in the early ‘70s. Even though HPs were prohibited then, that heavy round was a certain stopper. Yours are very nice.

Welcome Chris. I think that you have one of the nicest engraved model 58's that I have ever seen, and I believe that it is the first engraved one posted on this thread.
Be sure to post some more pictures when you get it home. We all love pics

I think the reason for the M58 was pretty much the same as for the M28. A less expensive revolver the PD's could afford as issue weapons, back in their early days when revolvers were still the most common carry piece, and when .41M was being touted as the next best thing to sliced bread; better than .357M, but not as brutal to shoot as the .44M. Its no-frills appearance, fixed sight and 4" barrel was directly aimed at the service revolver market.
It's funny that the same thing has happened to the .40 S&W cartridge that happened to .41RM; offered as a middle-of-the-road caliber, better than 9mm, but not as hard to handle as 10mm. It was popular for a while, but now is such a slow seller that a couple of manufacturers quit making guns for it. Whereas 10mm has made a resurgence, just as .44RM has gained popularity again, if not as a service gun but one for hunting and personal defense. .41RM seems to be regaining some of its former "glory" as well; I wonder if manufactured ammo for it will also make a comeback, once (and if) this latest mess ever gets resolved.
At any rate, I'm a die-hard .41 Magnum fan, bought a S- prefix M57 almost a year ago, and this past week found an ANIB S-prefix (1967) M58 to go with it. I posted a thread about it elsewhere, but here's a couple of pics of the M58, been a safe queen for over 50 years: (I don't know why these pics loaded upside down, they're right side up in my computer)

Hair Trigger, I totally disagree. If you can remember Police Officers back then weren't making killer wages and a cheaper revolver was veay desirable to them and their low wage level.
IMHO.

The 58 carries better than the heavier 27, 28, 29, or 57 - it's unshrouded barrel makes it lighter.

I have an S-prefix San Fransico PD gun made in about 1967-1968 .41 Magnum with Pachs in about 97% condition I'm wanting to sell any idea what they're going for?

I thought that's what I said; the M58 as a less expensive option to the M57 as a duty weapon, just as the M28 is a less expensive option to the M27. And the officer didn't always have to buy his duty weapon, the department issued them many times; another way the M58 was designed as a duty carry, the department could buy more of them for the same money as fewer M57's.

Well, they do make the Model 25, comes both as a .45 Auto cartridge or a .45 Colt. It's a tad fancier, more like the Model 27 or Model 57. More options available (adjustable sights and barrel lengths) than the M58 offered.

Well, the SWSC says ANIB value is $1100, Excellent is $950. I paid in that range for mine. The present Catalog is 4 years old, so you may se prices higher than that. I'd certainly ask more than you expect to get, to give yourself some bargaining room. As popular as they seem to be, I doubt you's scare anybody off if you asked $1100 for yours. Do you have factory stocks, box and paperwork, too?

Farmer,
The lack of original stocks will set you back 150-200 depending on condition. A true 97% gun would likely sell close to a grand even missing the stocks. Do post some photos.....you know we all love pictures
I think that the San Francisco guns are the most elegantly marked of the model 58 series. The San Antonio, TX PD looks like it was hand stamped by a 6th grade shop student....(they were applied with single hand stamps at the SAPD armory).

I would not have thought when I overpaid for my blue 58 , in 1982 ... that it would be worth double the $$ plus 250 dollars.
Shortly after the purchase , I showed it to my gunsmith , who told me it was only worth 180 bucks.
It is still over 90% cond. by a smidge. Set.# 17908X. Makes it middle 1973 ?

I have been shooting mine today , a real pleasure to shoot . I had to firelap the barrel . I have never encountered this before but there was a tight spot where they roll stamped the side of the barrel , and of course the usual spot where the barrel joins the frame . Today , it is very very accurate and the barrel after about 100 rounds of cast is clean as a whistle . I only have one but I shoot it " a lot " from mild to wild . I cast my own and size .411 . Had to buy that size of die from Buffalo Arms , special order . regards Paul

This old thing is the most recent Model 58 to find its way here. Worn finish and grips are original style but nicked and worn but it is a S prefix gun. The debate is whether to leave it as is or redo it into a 45 Colt with the 45 caliber barrel and Bowens combat sights.

In 1976 in California while in the Army I got a Security Guard job and was told to provide my own handgun. I walked into the local gun shop and told the owner what I needed and that I didn’t have much money. He sold me a model 58 marked “SFPD” with swivel holster, drop pouch and a box of ammo for as I recall $125.00. I sold it (along with a 2.5 inch Python) a couple of years later when I was discharged. Yes .... I deserve to be smacked around.... rest assured I have beaten myself up about it multiple times.

I sold a few handguns decades ago to start a business. I regretted it too I replaced everything but my ‘75 python. I could ping small rocks on the 100 yd berm. But being out of work with a family to feed was more important. I know how you feel.
Take note youngsters don’t sell anything. That’s my point.

Its 45 colt vs 41 magnum power. The m58 is a sweet well balanced shooter. I like the 41 mag.

I have a friend that converted a 58 from 41 magnum to 45 Colt . If I remember right , he had Hamilton Bowen do the conversion . I shot it a few times , made for a sweet shooter . But I will keep mine as a 41 magnum . I lucked out and got a set of PC Magna's for mine from a member on this forum . Wanted to keep it as original as possible . It came with a set of S&W Target grips when I bought it . I figured a " service " gun needs " service " grips . Regards Paul

All my N-frames wear the same pattern Hogue Monogrips. The uniformity dramatically improves my shooting with all of them.

Well, as much as I love the 58's, there is something to be said in making something that the factory never made. I can't wait to see what you come up with.....we have some 45 Colt fans around as well

At current prices I suspect you'll end up with an enormous investment.

Am I in?
Apparently, carried - sweated, wetted, and pitted - nickeled, and carried some more. Something about a sow, purse, and lipstick are rattling in my head.

Sweet.
I reckoned since it was a SAPD revolver, it deserved something a little better than the rubber grips with which someone had embarrassed it. So, I hope these VZ Grips are acceptable stocks...

Late to the party
I originally picked up one to be a donor gun. Liked it so much that I bought another. The one one the left supposedly had a trigger job by Behlert, according to the guy that sold me the gun.
Nothing to prove it, but it is the best trigger pull on my guns, including my Jovino’s
The Third .41 mag is a cluster ….. that I ended up with in a trade.
Supposedly a mod57 with a 657 barrel. 851F5DE0-A231-4182-B3D3-9D9AD7512767.jpg

They do kind of grow on you... I would have passed on the one above except for it being SAPD marked... and it was priced right.
I like your trio.

Earlier this year I was able to purchase a set of Keith Brown N Frame Bird's Eye Maple grips that had been donated to Bill Cross to auction for the benefit of the S&WCA.
I decided to put them on a very original M58.
I like them.

Chris,
I bet those stocks tame the recoil from the stout 210gr Remington loads! They look great too

TY.
I am probably not going to shoot this one. It is original (N prefix), barely fired and in excellent condition with box, papers, etc. I also have the original grips serialized to the gun. The prices seem to be steadily increasing on these so don't want to devalue it.
I am hitting the gun shows looking for a shooter grade 58 that isn't priced as a collector piece.
Seems to be a bit of a unicorn these days.

Finally!
I've been trying to join this little club for over a month, and I have chased 58s everywhere I could think. Who knew there would be one at a Podunk gun show a couple hours from home? Just got done polishing her up with some Ren wax and replacing the dried up oil to slick things up. I don't think this one has been fired outside of the factory. Yoke bluing is 100%, forcing cone is clean, no burn rings I could find, and the breech end of the barrel frame is completely smut free. Grips number to the gun, and the only blemishes are where the cleaning set rubbed against the steel. Damn those things!
Wood panels look rough, but hoping that can be rectified. The checkering outline routing is pretty sloppy. Wood is bone dry.
Couple pics - no matter how many times I wipe always a missed spot.
I'm happy
ETA: As I put the box in the safe noticed $80 written on the back. Could that have been the price back in the day?

Reason: Box price found?
