Default Model 66 (no-dash) questions

I have some questions about my 4" Model 66 (no-dash) s/n 9K8XXX and I hope the membership can help. It has a flash chrome serrated trigger, flash chrome 0.375" hammer, a blued rear sight assembly, and orange front sight insert. I bought it from a police trade-in shop several years ago and it's the revolver that started me collecting S&W's. It was obviously carried but is in very good condition. I cannot post pics right now, sorry.

1. Could someone give me a DOB?
2. What would be the correct grips... Target or Magna? Could they have been either?
3. What would the correct box and tools look like?

Thanks

I can't help with your questions (sorry) but my 66 no dash was a Cleveland LEO EDC. Mine is a great firearm, and I'm sure yours will be too.

Default 66

DOB ~'75--most 4" guns I've seen from that period were shipped with target stocks--would have been shipped in a blue 2 piece box--there are lots of them around, and they can be found with paperwork and tool kit, still reasonably priced compared to earlier stuff.

Below is a picture of an early NIB 66 no dash showing the stainless sights sights and the correct Goncalo Alves "Football" Target stocks.

It's an easy swap to change Target stocks to Magnas. I've never seen a 66 no-dash that was delivered with Magna's on a 4 inch but special orders could have been made.

The early 66s had stainless sights. Many later no dashes had red ramp front sights and black rear sights due to PD's not liking the light sight picture. Many early police guns with stainless sights were either modified by S&W or local gunsmiths. Your later serial number may indicate it was delivered with the R/R and black rear sight.

They were shipped in the blue boxes. It would have included a tool kit consisting of a screw driver, cotton swab, rod and wire brush.

I didn't have a handy 66 box picture available. This box is for a 67 but they look the same. Some early 66s had an integrated label like this picture rather than the stick-on label of later guns.

What exactly would the tool kit look like? I've seen examples, but I'm not sure if there were different styles.

The shop told me that it was a trade-in from the Youngstown PD.

Thanks
