I don't have any pictures handy right now, but it should be easy enough to tell simply by looking at them. target is 1/2" wide, standard is 3/8" wide,

Standard (or service if you prefer) hammers are .265" across the thumb spur area of the hammer, target hammers are either .400" or .500". There are also hammers referred to as semi target and they run .375" across the spur.

I thought the .265 hammer was unique to the M&P line of K frame guns and the smaller J frame guns, I don't recall ever having seen one on a N frame M27-2.
I thought the .375 was the standard, the .400 would be the semi target, and the .500 being the target
Gunner's right though.........easiest thing to do is look at gunbroker

From what I'm seeing the Model 27/The 357 Magnum used the .400" Semi-Target hammer from 1948 (as the pre-27) till 1975 and a .500" Target hammer from 1975 till 1994. Just measure the hammer. Ref: SCSW

Pics
This is a 27-2 with the .500" target hammer. I was not able to dig out the .400" but I will post when I get to the gun. I have a 586 with a .375" semi-target hammer and it looks just like the '500" only that much narrower.
