Default Model 36 help

Hi all, I'm new here and I have a question.

I have a model 36 that was handed down to me from my grandfather. He's since passed on, and I would like to know how old this gun is.
The barrel is pinned, the butt is square, the serial # is 772###.
Mod 36 is stamped inside near the cylinder hinge.

I love this gun and will keep it until I can hand it down to my son. I haven't shot it in a long while and am looking forward to getting some range time in soon.

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about the passing of your Grandfather but I'm glad to see you treasure the S&W he gave you.
With that serial numnber and looking at the SCSW I would think it comes from about 1968 or 69.

Yup I would guess 1968 also. You have a nice family treasure there, enjoy it!

Thanks for the help guys.
I was thinking it was from the '50s or '60s. It's cool because the gun looks really good, almost brand new. I'll try to take a pic and post it up in the near future. I thought about putting some fancy new grips on it, but decided to leave it old school because that's how it should be.

I seem to remember that my grandfather had a matching pair of .38's, but I haven't had any luck finding out who in the family (if anyone) got the other one.

It wold have to be 68 or earlier because after that the gun control act of 1968 required a letter in the number. Does it have a flatlatch or diamond around the grip screw?
