Ned, this has been a matter of discussion for a long time now.
Optimistic sellers have always ASKED high prices of their wares.

What they bring is another story.

Default Yeah

I know Allen, but I bought one of those 2 last weekend for $600 bucks. I'm not bame that on over optimism, I'm sayin' GREED & STUPIDITY. I'm eyeballin' a PRE-27, 3.5" in the box with tools, for $1750, not a mark on it. It's one thing to ask top dollar for something RARE, this is a combination of the above mentioned GREED & STUPIDITY + LACK KNOWLEDGE, & RESEARCH.

A few years ago, I had my pre -29, 5", 4screw, in an auction in Evansville. 2 guys tried to tell the auctioneer & myself that gun was cut down from a 6" barrel, and should not be priced that high to start, when I had Roy's letter in my pocket.

And I don't mean to be judgemental, I think it is hilarious what this world is coming to, and am looking forward to the day of reckoning.

Ned

Talking I own it so it's the BEST!!!!!

I gotta go with Nedroe here. I sold a nice Smith not long ago for the upper end of the spectrum, but it was/is a MINTY gun and it was IN the spectrum, Not out in the "I'm hooked on Crack" nebula of Jupiter. The new owner is a great guy and knew what he was looking at. He is very pleased and I'm happy it has a great home filled with appreciation for it. Some people are just waiting for that one MAROON that will figure if he pays a stupid amount, it will actually be worth more. I'm glad I don't have more dollars than sense (cents?).

I saw a very reblued "Beakeart" at the gun show this weekend. Price tag was $999.00. When I asked the dealer if he thought it was reblued, he said "yeah, if it was original, it would be 1999.00". I saw some pretty good looking 4" 29-2's for $1500.00. Seems I have been seeing the same dealers with the same guns for a couple of years now.......

Well on Gun Broker it costs nothing to list a gun for sale up there so people selling their guns having nothing to lose by asking very high prices. They are hoping to snag somebody that doesn't no anything about gun values or really wants one bad to pay them their high price. That's why you will see the same dealers trying to sell the same guns forever up there. In this case unless the gun was owned by some very famous person with documentation to prove it the seller is out of their mind. If the sellers had to pay a listing fee based on the value of the gun they were selling you would see more realistic pricing on Gun Broker because the dealers listing their items for very high prices would get tired of paying a fee at the end of the month on guns that had little chance of selling.

I only check the competed auctions for a revolver on Gun Broker that I might be interested in because that's what the real market sets the price at.

It's very easy to get discouraged at shows. I finally realized that at least 1/2 the tables at our local shows are for display (albeit displayed with price tags) and the remaining tables actually have guns they are trying to sell.

Unfortunately a lot of older S&W's fall into the "displayed with a price tag" category. I actually get a chuckle out of the concept of taking my guns to the show...marking them way up and then bragging to my wife..."see honey, I told you all those guns I bought would go waaaaay up in value. I just needed to price them for sale."

I mean it's a $700 patrolman if my price tag says it is....right?!

Yea, and a good frined who is a dealer says those dealers that basically have over priced display tables spend more time at the shows horse trading with the other dealers like them rather then actually trying to sell their stuff. He says they just thrive on that and are always busting each others chops about who got the better end of the trade. It's a regular good old boy club of guys that have been doing it for years.

I went to the local dealer show in Laramie last Friday. Paid $6 to get in. Now I remember why I haven't been to a show in at least 5 years.

I e-mailed the guy directly from GunBroker and asked if I was missing something. He told me that he had seen one like his sell for $2000 thus his asking price. The one he saw was a Md 27-5 reintroduciton model which only 1500 were made in 3 1/2 and 5 inch guns. I thought that was a stupid price but that is what it brought. He priced his from seeing that one sell. I sure hope he gets his asking price-don't we all. Here is the one he saw. Smith & Wesson 27 w Box/Papers 3.5" EXCEPTIONAL : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Default Like I said....

I have 2 27-2's, with 3-1/2 barrels, on unfired, no box or docs, that I've had for 15 years or more, 1 shooter with imperfections, that I bought at Louisville last week for $600 bucks. Will I take $1500 bucks apiece? Sure! Will I be greedy enough, or stupid enough to ask that? No.

I have another good story about an idiot on GB, but better keep it to myself.

And, if I sell those 2 27-2's for $1500 apiece, I'm gonna buy a pre-27, 5 screw, 3-1/2" that I've been eyeballin' for the last three years at $1750

What about a Pre Model 27, 5 Screw, 5" for $1,100?
