Default S&W Model 49

I have just picked up a very nice 95% model 49.
I am not sure of DOM but SN is ACM 64XX.
Does anyone have an idea on when it was made? I'm guessing the mid 1960's . Value ?

Mid 1980's. Worth $300-450 based on condition.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a web site that has the
S&W serial numbers listed for all models?

I think many of us (including myself) use one of the 3 versions of
the Standard Catalog of S&W by Supica and Nahas...

There are other books but unaware of a website yet.

The letter code SN#'s started to transition in 1980 with AAA,
Your ACM is probably somewhere around 1983

If you email S&W at [email protected] and tell them your model number and serial number they will email you the date of manufacture. I have done this for my 1983 K-22 and my 1969 Model 36 square butt.

You have acquired a very nice concealed carry revolver. I have had mine since the 1970's and carry it quite a bit to this day. Inside the waistband or on the hip. I use standard pressure ammo for practice as well as carry. They shoot to point of aim with the 158 grain slugs and they have moderate recoil. Having the ability to shoot single action is a plus in my book.

I've got a pinned nickle 49 in 98% shape I've posted here and other sites for sale. No takers. There seems to be a special/limited following for the bodyguard 49/38.

I'm a huge fan of the model 49's and really liked yours. The only big holdup with yours is that I'm not a big lover of nickle. It's still calling to me though....

Funny how it is. Nickle guns call me like the Sirens song. Most seem to dislike them.

No. I still miss my first revolver. I traded with an huge amount of money for a Colt 2e generation SAA .45 colt. It was an model 19 nickle finish.
I wish I still had it.

Guys, Thanks for all of your help and information. I have a fondness for S&W J-Frames. The 49 series is my favorite of all of the models. I have picked up some good information from all of you that responded , Thanks for your help.

I have put a set of stag grips and a Tyler T-Grip (getting hard to find those) and plan on carrying it . It does ride nicely .

I love the 49. They began manufacturing them in 1959 so they have always been a model numbered gun. One of the few where the airweight preceded it..Pre Model 38 Bodyguard came out in 1955.
I have a blued one from early sixties, a SS 649-3 in 357 mag and just picked up this stunning Nickel example from 1983.
Great find to the OP.

Greenbeanie67,

Great find! My wife confiscated my M49 several years ago. I did however, find an M649 no dash to replace it. I carry mine daily.

Found this on the net. It may or may not be accurate.

From:
http://thefiringline.com/forums/show...=277680&page=6

Early J frame serial numbers
For models 36, 37, 38, 49, 50 and pre model number versions.

1950 = start at 1
1952 = 7369 - 21342
1953 = 28916
1955 = 55050 - 75000
1957 = 117770 - 125000
1962 = starts at 295000
1969 = ends at 786544

J serial Prefix serial numbers.
For models 36, 37, 38, 49, 50.

1969-1970 = J1 - J99999
1971-1972 = 1J1 - 999J99
1973-1974 = J100000 - J250000
1975-1976 = J250001 - J370000
1976-1977 = J370001 - J610000
1977-1978 = J610001 - J670000
1979-1980 = J670001 - J760000
1981 = J760001 - J915400
1982 = J915401 - 1J18600
1983 = 1J18601 - 1JXXXX

1955 - 4 screw side plate ends
1957 - stamping of model number at 125000
1966 - flat latch ends
1968 - diamond grips end
1975 - heavy barrel standard
1982 - end pinned barrel

-------------------------------------------------

I have a set of Uncle Mike's boot grips on my model 49. Make a HUGE difference in holding/pointing over the factory wood grips-while still being "petite" feeling. I also swerved into a set of Pachmayr Compac grips. VERY comfortable-but maybe a tad big for and invisible feeling for carry. Will use those for range use.
