Default Early Model 29-2 with 8" barrel - UNFIRED - comes with wooden case

I have an opportunity to purchase a Model 29-2 with the 8 3/8” barrel. I beleive this was the “Dirty Harry” model. This gun was new in the 70’s. It is STILL new – it's never been fired - not even once! It’s in absolutely mint condition and comes with the original presentation box and all paperwork.

Can anybody give me a ballpark figure on what this gun is worth? I’d appreciate any advice you can give me.

I believe the original dirty harry revolver was a 6.5 inch barreled version but that's niether here nor there on the 8 3/8 inch barreled version you are looking at. If it's as you say it is and new and unfired in the presentation case and the goodies you would be lucky to get it for 8 to 9 hundred and some dealers would ask a lot more.
Here's my 29-2 with 8 3/8 inch barrel and it's about a 98% revolver that has been fired very little and I paid slightly to much at $850 with no goodies or box.

Thank you. That's about what I thought it would be worth. And of course you are correct on the 8 3/8". I meant to type that but made it 1/8" instead of 3/8".

I'm going to offer $900 for it and see what happens.

Thanks FYIMO. Only thing is, I hope my resolve holds. I'm afraid once I sit there and hold it for a while I'll just push my cheque book over the table and tell him to fill in whatever it's going to take. Sigh .........

While you are on the Dirty Harry subject, Back in the day I had a 8 3/8 model 57. I read where Clint used that for the shooting scenes because of recoil. Anyone else know of that?

No, it is well-documented that a model 29 was used. Also, movie blanks generate very little kick .

Thanks. It was a gun rag back in the 80's. You can not believe the press.

Yeah, it may come to that. I have not seen the gun myself yet. I'm driving over to look at it this morning. My description of it to date (NIB) comes from a friend who did see it. According to him it's absolutely pristine, NIB, never fired. I trust him, but I have not seen it yet. I have spoken with the owner on the phone, and he confirms it has never been fired. If it really IS that good I want it, but talking him into selling it is a different story. He told me he bought it to take hiking in the woods for protection - and he still wants to do that "some day". I might have to go buy him a new 629 and "trade". That way he gets a nice new SS gun to go hiking with, and I get the 29-2. Just have to play it by ear I guess. One thing I WILL do is make sure that if he ever does decide to part with it I'm the first person he calls. Well, time to leave and go look at it. Wish me luck.

Sir,

This may not get to you before you leave, but that's OK. Just wanted to mention that I bought one close to five years ago that nearly matches the description you've given us of the one you're going to look at. I was ashamed of what I paid -$975, but they're going for close to that now, so I guess I just paid that much "too soon". It was on Gunbroker, and someone else wanted it nearly as badly as I did -hence a bidding war. I don't do that anymore.

Now I wish I had it in the 6-1/2" version -maybe I can trade it with someone someday.

Andy

I bought my mint Nickel 29-2 with 6.5 inch barrel 2 years ago and it's not for sale or trade but they are out there. I bought mine like you a bit early for $850 but to me it was worth it.

Yes, I would say that that is mint. Is it an N-prefix gun?

I've never mentioned, by the way, how much I enjoy your pictures. Thanks for sharing them with us.
