Is a mod 58 still a 58 if it`s a 3" .44 magnum?
Before they kick me out of the unofficial model 58 club for this one I guess I should explain that I didn`t do it and this S prefix 58 was like this when I found it. I picked it up at a show a while back from a guy who said he had the work done years ago when he was an investigator for a sheriff`s office in Texas. He had it round butted and used a model 29 cylinder and cut down barrel. Engraving is by Jeff Flannery. It`s one of those guns I didn`t know I needed until I saw it.

That's very nice.
If I had seen it, I would have "needed" it too.

Good question and nice gun. Regardless of a final answer, I would have bought it too! Guess it will go down as a modified 58?

Wow, I was always tempted to cut the barrel on my 58 down to 3".
Couldn't afford it when I was carrying it. Didn't want to after I quit carrying it.
That's one fine looking gun..
Thanks for sharing.

Doc44 has a similarly done 29-58.
IIRC, there were 3 total made by the factory like that.
If I had seen that gun, this would be MY GLOAT thread

Cool looking magnum.
Something the factory should have made as a
regular production revolver.

Fine-looking revolver.
Do Texas plainclothes cops/deputies typically carry that kind of firepower? I mean, I know they grow bad guys big there, but...

Seems like I heard of such a thing but I`ve never been able to catch a glimpse of a factory one until now. Very interesting. The bad thing about this forum is that my list of things I need keeps getting longer the more time I spend on it. Thanks for the photo.

Very pretty! Kind of reminds me of the customized M64 I had done that I didn't know I was going to do until TheShootist1894 showed off a gun he did for someone else. 4" barrel, DAO, reimported from somewhere, nastiest trigger in America and then, VOILA! An ugly duckling no more. I didn't know......until I did!
Yours is WAY fancier and sexier, of course, but it's the concept that I like, that "need" thing....

There is a name engraved on the right side of the frame just below the cylinder. I can't quite make it out. Was the fellow you bought that gorgeous gun from the same name as on the gun?

It's an abomination! Quick, give it to me and I'll hide it in my safe!

The 29-58 built by S&W in 1974..... Was that built or rebuilt? If originally built in that configuration, what model number does it have? Neat gun either way.

Does the 29-58 have a Fitz type cutout at the front right side of the trigger guard? It is hard to tell due to the angle of the photo, but it sure looks like it does.

lefty jake...Yes, it has the thinned trigger guard. The round butt is also custom and regular N-frame round butt stocks will not fit the contour of the grip frame. I had Keith Brown make a set of zebra wood combat stocks fitted to the revolver. These stocks not only enhance the looks of the revolver, but make it much more pleasant to shoot. I have carried this revolver in the Scapegoat Wilderness in Montana on horseback during several elk hunts and its short barrel makes it ideal for this purpose. click on the photos for a closer look

Very nice "model 64-12". That reminds me that I have an airweight 2" barrel with no finish in my parts stash. hmmmmm.

It says "T J Morris" and yes, that is who I bought it from. I`ve had it about a year and still haven`t gotten around to shooting it.

No, it's not a Model 58.
It's awesome!
I've been saying for years we need HB versions of the 21 & 22.
Now I see we need 3" barrels on them, too.

29 snubs were the issue gun for prosecutors in one Wyoming county 30 years ago.
Oh, by the way: MERCY! That's beautiful.

There was a brief fad back in the 70s for .44 Magnum carry. It started with some motorcycle police (how do you stop a car while on a motorcycle? .44 Magnum!) The lead flat nose was supposed to deform and dig in to the metal on the swoopy bodywork of the day better than other rounds.
Geoff
Who notes the .44 Special has been doing a great job for many years, but usually in large frame guns.
