Default Model 19 in a .22 lr???

I have a question I could use some help with. When I bought my first Smith, I saw in this guy's cabinet a Model 19 nickel plate, snubbed revolver but it was chambered in either .22 lr or .22 mag. I checked it too and it was chambered in a .22 and as I have learned more, I don't believe they sold then that way, but maybe something I missed?? I know Colt did that with Python, Diamondbacks, Detective Specials and others would be offer in a variety of calibers. Most all in .22, some in .38 S&W and so on, but I don't think I've ever seen that without Smith revolvers in the mid century era. Anyone know something I missed?? I'd love to know. If not, it was probably done as a custom job. I do know it was a Model 19 frame, I know because if it had been a Mag I might've gotten talbot one instead of my 15-3 snub. Thanks in advance....

I've never heard of or about a .22 caliber model 19. I think it must be a one of custom gun.

The only thing that comes to mind would have been a model 53 in .22 Jet (K frame, shrouded barrel, .22 LR and WRF cylinders available), but the shortest barrel on one would have been 4". With enough determination and cash I suppose someone could have installed a 2.5" model 19 barrel relined to .22, but that would be fairly unlikely.

Default Not All That Unlikely....

I made this one day when I was bored and had an urge to mutilate somethin', in this case a model 17-2, TT,TH

When the boredom eased, & I awoke from the stupor, what I ended up with was this 17/19 Frankengun.

I know I'll roast in hell for doin' it

Yeah, I would've gotten a picture but they don't allow that at the gun shows. I thought it was a 19 at first and I think he had it labeled as a 19 too.

Well a 19 in .22 would be a 17, so I'm not sure why someone would go to the trouble....

No one has addressed the conversion from CF to RF. Seems to me that would take some pretty serious modification of the frame.

Not saying this is what it is but, I bought a .22 Jet Mag barrel and cylinder and made a M-53 clone (dedicated to just Jet Mag no .22 L.R. option) on a Model 15 frame. Also bought a .32 M-16-4 barrel and cylinder and made a .327 on a M-15 frame. Parts can be interchanged this way.

That could be what it was. At the time I saw it I didn't know enough about old Smiths to question it unfortunately, or to better examine it.

They didn't make "snub" Model 17 revolvers at all, regardless of finish.

No, the 15 has the exposed rod with the lug at the end. The snubs have a heavy barrel, but the longer barrels have a tapered barrel.

I've seen pictures of a blued, snub 19 with a square butt!! Only one I've seen online that way but it looks great. I've also seen a round butt snub 15 once online too. If I had the extra guns to spare, I'd love to have a blued 15 and 19 snubs and swap Barrels and ejector rods and have a round butt 15 in 357 and a square butt 19 in 38 if that makes sense. Since the 15 snub has a heavy barrel it might be able to withstand the 357 I'd imagine. That would be 2 cool unique revolvers!! If only I could figure out how to easily add pictures I'd share what the 2 looked like. They both look great. I wish they just had RB and SB options for both snubs.....

Okay, that's what I figured. Problem back the was I didn't look inside the yoke/crane for the Model number or ask too much about it. I was also heavily focused on the 15-3 I was holding, go figure!

I believe it mostly was a M53 barrel cut down and fitted to a M17 frame.

Default Another Possibility....

A modified 53 Round Butt like this one. It is just awaiting my next boredom session to become a 3 inch

It could happen this winter.

We redid a pair of model 19 revolvers for a fellow once.
Made a 4" round butt and a 2-1/2" square butt for him.
The barrel swap job was no big effort.( Barrel and frame fixtures already in our shop.)
He swore to others that they came from the factory with those configurations.
