I'm curious about something. Was it commonplace for LA Detectives to carry 6" guns? I had been under the impression that they carried snubbies back in revolver days, though on the original Dragnet, Friday's partner, played by Ben ALexander, carried a 6" Smith while Joe carried a D Special....both crossdraw.

Snub-nosed revolvers (2") were never considered primary weapons for either Plainclothes or uniform carry. Narcotics officers used them for buys, but yes, Detectives and plainclothes officers carried a 6" (if that was what the officer was issued) concealed. The Lewis Leather cross-draw holster was popular. Later on, the 4" M15 was issued and carried. If the Officer purchased his own revolver, it had to conform to LAPD duty weapon rules for on-duty carry.

I have a model 14-3 that I bought 5 years ago that was listed as being an LAPD Officer's weapon that per Dept. guidelines had been converted to DAO. A lot of holster wear showed that it had been carried a lot but it does shoot nice. MY gunsmith restored it back to factory SA/DA.

LAPD never authorized .357 ammo. They finally outlawed .357 guns to prevent it from happening either on purpose or accidentally. I knew an old Metro guy who had some very special .38 hand loads for his Model 28.

I don't remember the powder charge, but they used new Remington round nose lead bullets and primed brass. They looked identical to issued ammo.

LAPD, NJSP, They were my role models as a young lad and in the 70's that 6" K-38 was the bomb as far as a perfect weapon. They were and are very accurate and a 6" is not too long for a radio car if carried in an appropriate holster. My first duty weapon was a 6" model 19 and it served me well and still does.

George Maharis played Buz Murdock. Glenn Corbett was in it too. There were a ton of Hollywood's best that appeared at one time or another: Robert Duvall, Lon Chaney Jr., Nina Foch, even "Happy Days" mom Marion Ross.

Came across this photo of the guns involved. This was in the lead investigator's case file. The K-38 was Campbell's, and the Colt Officers Model Match was Hettinger's.

I've also found the memories voiced by the members that are veterans of the LAPD very interesting.

As along time fan of LE, who briefly looked into joining the Pittsburgh PD, i enjoy hearing what you guys have to say about this all of this. I have read most of Wambaugh's books, and absolutely loved The Choir Boys. too bad the movie tried to make it into a lame comedic endeavor. That's one I'd love to see remade true to the dark tone of tne book.

Man, threads like this one don't come along often enough. I came on a 14 Officer department in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California in 1977 as a 21 year old kid fresh out of the academy. I had the choice of carrying a department-issued SW Model 15 4" in a Border Patrol holster, or I could carry my personally owned S&W M28 4". I carried the 28 with some of the fancy new speed loaders and a Bianchi "Berns and Martin" style front break holster. We were allowed to carry .357 mag. if our guns permitted, being a rural area and often backing either Kings or Tulare County S.O. as we were on the county line. Little town with lots of action and little backup. Generally, two officers per watch, sometimes with a Sergeant. One hand-held radio (usually carried by the sergeant), a two frequency radio in the car that shared one channel between three of the county's five total agencies (counting CHP), and a single bullet-resistant vest owned by the department that no one would wear for fear of being label a chicken***t. I remember searching high and low to find a Model 19 or 66 and couldn't believe it when I got lucky enough to locate and buy one.
Looking back, I miss that time in law enforcement, the way we did business, how we were perceived by the public and the general wonder of it all. Growing up, the Onion Field was a familiar story as I lived about 65 miles north of Bakersfield and ended up working for two departments in the area over my career, the last one being my home town.

I thought I'd resurrect my own zombie thread with this pertinent question.
I was doing some reading about the North Hollywood shootout of 1997 and came across this photo from that fateful day:
How is it that 30 years after Reed and Malloy turned in their Model 14s for 4" Model 15s this stud is still banging away at bank robbers with his 6" gun?

Although Reed and Malloy turned in their 6” guns in the 1960’s, the Sean Penn LAPD character in the 1988 film “Colors” was still carrying a 6” Model 14. If it wasn’t for the fritz helmet the cop in the photo is wearing you could mistake it for a scene from “Adam-12” or “Colors”.
The LAPD website lists their approved firearms, and the “Model 14” is still listed, although the photo is of a 4” Model 15. The Model 67 is also still approved.
By the way, thanks for bringing this thread back from the dead, I really enjoyed it. I read “The Onion Field” as a kid, and watched “Adam-12” reruns every afternoon. “Adam-12” is one of the reasons I wanted to be in law enforcement, and several guys I’ve worked with also mention the show as a reason for their job choice.

LAPD,s approved gun list was/is always changing, mostly dependant on what the Big Chief liked /wanted or what maybe OIC of the firearms unit wanted or could get approved as weapons that were better were developed. I believe it was sometime in mid to late 70s 6" revolvers were again approved, not issued. In 1981/2 the LAPD model 68s came out and a lot of people had them on their firearms card.
When S/W came out with the full lug model 14 many (myself included ) went that direction. I worked with several older guys who had custom model 14s with a 1" or just under bull barrel (no rib) front sight like a Weigand, just not interchangeable. Some were Davis guns or Cheshire Perez. These were approved. Probably grandfathered in when the conversion to 4" happened. My first training officer carried a 5" 38/44 Outdoorsman, that gun stayed on the approved list well into 2000 or so.
No one really paid much attention to who carried a revolver, as long as it was an approved model .This went on until the later 90s when it was discovered that officers who were issued berettas during the Academy and only received minimal BUG training with a 2", were later switching to revolvers , mostly 6", to help their shooting score for the Bonus course or to look older. This later changed and if you came on after 9/89 or whenever LA started issuing berettas you had to carry a semi/auto as a primary duty weapon. All these pictured are approved.

I remember reading just within the last few years that the last NYPD Model 10 HB’s and their owners who were grandfathered in during the switch to semi-auto pistols around 1992 have finally left active service.
The officer in that photo doesn’t look like a spring chicken. If LAPD had provisions like NYPD, old-timers could well still have carried 6-inchers in 1997, no matter what happened in TV shows

Back to the Onion Field....
For 27 years I lived 40 miles from Bakersfield (Tehachapi). In 1992, Karl Hettinger was a Kern County Supervisor, running for reelection. The local paper kept printing articles questioning his integrity, which p*ssed me off to no end! It was as if they didn't even know (or care) what he endured that horrible night. I wrote Karl and received this nice response, written in his own hand.
RIP Officers Campbell and Hettinger. I will never forget.
