What's a K38 Target Masterpiece worth these days
Thinking about selling my K38 Target Masterpiece and wondering what's the market value these day for a 80% condition, two grips, no box nor paper.

Kali has higher prices, but around here it would be $300-350 gun.

I have to agree. Looks well used. I just paid $500 for a near mint K38 circa 1956. There are a lot of these out there with the exception of the standard bbl. model. Big Larry

You know, gun prices usually run all over the board. I bought the top gun, a 4 screw, for $500 on Gun Broker for $500. No bids.( I have the original numbered diamond center grips). Thought I did well until I walked into a pawn shop last week and walked out with this 1975 vintage Python for $800. Now that is a steal. Couple weeks back I missed a N.I.B. 5 screw K-38 with tools and all, on Cabelas site of all places, for $500. Win some, lose some. Big Larry

I just started looking for a K-38 to go with my K-22, and was figuring to pay around $300 for a well used shooter grade, so this is right in line with my thinking.

Depends on if you want to buy one.... or spend your life looking for one. I haven't seen any in stores... very few at the gun club. Those who have em keep em. I hear stories from the guys here on the S&W forum about these low prices... but show me someone here who is selling one for that... I'll eat my hat and some other stuff that is equally disgusting. In reality if you want one in good condition be prepared to spend $400. If you want one that is nicer, better have more. Of course I am counting shipping and FFL fees. The lowest I've paid has been $375+$30 S&H + $15 for FFL. Add it up... $420 for a 14-4. But those deals are few and far between. Be prepared to wait... and wait, and spend a lot of time bidding and looking. My advice would be to find a nice one, and pay $500 or $550, and take it home.

drhenzler has a good point. Value and availability do not always go hand in hand. I looked around for over a year and found a 5 screw K38 with a tiny amount of muzzle wear, est. 96% condition, "but" had pachmayer grips and a red dot on it. I had grips, but did not realize the "value" of replacing a front sight and a rear sight. I now have about about $500 in mine. So, if you find one in the condition you desire buy it.

What is a partial serial number on the old boy? Do the magna grips, bad as they are, number to the gun? The target grips are not anywhere close and take away from the looks to me. If the magnas do not number, the gun may actually look better with no grips at all. Some older fishhook Pre Model 14 K-38 Masterpieces are still sought after with a bit of wear.

Condition is everything. It could be $100 or it could be $500. Without pictures it is impossible to tell.
