s&w values and age
Hello folks, i needed some help on finding the age/value on 2 guns i recently acquired. One is a model 19-5 357 and the other is a 38 special ctg. I can only find one serial number on the ctg. On the 357 there is one on the butt of the grip as well. Any advice would be helpful.

Welcome to the Forum. Photos to judge condition and other factors are best for value estimates, if you have them. On the left bottom under the posts is "Post Reply"; click on this, and toward the bottom of the next page you'll see Manage Attachments. Click on that and you can post photos from your computer or a link.
For dating purposes, any letter(s) and numbers from the bottom of the grip frame can help with a ship date. Feel free to exclude some if you want, like 123xxx or ABC 12xx. Hope this is helpful.

We would need the serial number with two XX's in the last digits spot and any alphs letter like a K in front of the serial number to give you a date of birth. As far as value goes that is entirely tied to the guns condition and where you live as prices vary buy location and condition. If the one without the serial number on the butt is not a S&W then we would need to know the manufacturer. If they are S&W they will have the serial number on the butt and on early ones sometimes in different places also.

no pics yet
Alright so the ctg has 494** behind the cylinder and b640*** under the butt. The model 19-5 has 170k*** behind the cylinder but nothin on the butt. The ctg is pretty beat up and the 357 is probably 80%, with a little wear in the usually places.

Your 6" model 19-5 was shipped in 1982. You should find the 170Kxxx on the butt if you pull off the stocks. It looks to be at least a 97% gun from the photos. Call it a $450 gun or so.
The other one is likely a .38 Military & Police from the 1920s; the number on the rear cylinder face should match the one on the butt. Do you have photos of that one?

It appears to be a .38 M & P. If the stocks are original, it dates the gun to the 1930s. Perhaps a $250 gun if mechanically sound?

THose 38 CTG's are plentiful, but prices are all over the place-- some are just a couple hunnerd bucks but some are pushing a thou. What's up with that?
