Question model 681 limted edition

new owner of an excellent condition 681-3
gun is for .38 special only (not .357) and so is marked on the barrel.
shows CRPD over the trigger guard, everything else is standard.
understand this was a limited run for Con Rail, but have no other details.
would like to know how many units were made in .38 sp for Con Rail and reason for selecting this caliber. finally, is there a premium for this gun as compared to a standard .357 681? appreciate your help.

This model is mentioned on page 269 of the Standard Catalog of S & W, 3rd edition. 465 made in 1989 with a BDT prefix. Value is hard to judge, but a law enforcement collector may pay more than a standard 681. Hope this is helpful.

I am a retired member of that department. Reason for selecting this caliber over the .357 mag was the director of police at the time did not favor magnum calibers, thought them over powered and unnecessary; also he did not favor semi-automatics. Hope this helps. Let me know if you may be interested in sale or trade. Thanks.

I've got a CRPD marked 4043, anyone know what that stands for?
