I've got a buddy who is looking at a 19-4 4" Nickel. I've only seen ****** pics but it looks to be in 96% to 98% condition. No RR/WO or TT/TH but it is wearing Goncalo Alves Target Stocks from the correct era- not sure if they are original- but they could be. What type of pricing are you guys seeing out there on similar guns for a private sale?

I would guess glenncal1's dash 5 would have sold for less than a dash 4 due to its lack of P&R along with condition. I saw a 1980 4" blued 95% (?) 19-4 with TH, TT, TS, red ramp and white outlined rear at a LGS yesterday for $440 plus tax. I'm seriously tempted.

I had a nice one listed here for a long time. You can still find it under my posts. I had a lot of lookers but had only a little real interest and A LOT of low-ballers and time wasters. As you can see I'm was smart to do that. No flakes to deal with and more than a dozen bids (several over $500). Nothing shows the current value of an item like and a good honest auction. I had a half dozen guys try to convince me that my 19 was worth in the $325-$350 range! Sometimes it's seller beware.

Obviously it was the the stunningly beautiful Estwing next to your 19-3 that got the bidders lusting so bad they couldn't think. The $605 shipped that you realized just makes the LGS 19-4 all the more tempting.

I got mine for $7 at a half price going out of business sale when a tiny True Value Hardware on 1st Ave in downtown Seattle closed in 1975. I've kept it indoors when not in use so it still looks good, but I don't know if it could drive the bidders wild like yours!

I was watching that one, but in my opinion, the price got way too high, especially without the box and papers.

Honestly, I didn't think it would go that high ether. I knew that the price I was asking here was more than reasonable and I thought it might possibly bring $500 on the right day but I never expected it to be as strong as it was.

One thing that is difficult for some people (myself included) to get their minds around is the major regional differences that exist in the value of some of these older (somewhat collectable) guns.

In some parts of the country on any given day you can jump in your truck with 400 bucks in you pocket and be home in time for lunch with a 95%+ pinned and recessed model 19 and a box of shells. In other parts of the country you couldn’t find one in a month with $500.

To me the challenge/fun in this hobby isn't just finding the right gun. That's easy (just write the check). It's finding them at the right price. If I'm misreading the current value of a particular gun by 30-40% it's going to be very difficult for me to get into the game.

This is a great hobby, it is important to keep an open mind and always be learning.

A friend has a Model 19-3. The left side has good bluing but you can see small rust spots. The right side has the same, but the bluing is almost completely gone from the frame. The small screw is missing which holds the cylinder in the frame. The rear sight is half broken off. The latch to remove the cylinder from the frame is intact, but the lever is missing. He was wondering how much he could get for it and I told him "as is," about $150, maybe $200. Did I miss it very far? I told him if the missing parts were replaced, the gun was sand blasted and re-blued that he might get around $400 to $500 for it. Am I close on that figure?

Polish and reblue alone will be at or above $200. No idea on parts but I would check Numrich first. I wouldn't sand blast it, plastic bead shouldn't even be needed unless rust is real bad and pitted. I would soak it in a good oil like Kroil and see if you can scrub those spots clean some first. I doubt in the described condition it is worth investing much more than the parts needed to get it to be a shooter at least. If you need parts fitted then a gunsmith bill alone could eat up any real sale value. Sorry to sound all doom and gloom.

I've got a Model 19-4 .357 Combat Magnum DA revolver with a 4" barrel. It's nickel plated and original S&W grips. It's probably a 90-95% and has had very few rounds fired through it. I put it on guntrader.com for $500 and got so many offers that I couldn't keep up with them. It is my Dad's gun. I didn't want to get rid of the gun but he wanted to get enough cash to buy two Ruger P-95s (one for him and one for me). In the end I decided I would rather buy him a P-95 and keep the .357 magnum. Was I an idiot for turning down the $500-$600 offers?

It's interesting how much the prices have changed since the OP was about two years ago.

I'm sure that you did the right thing. That's better than saying: "No, you weren't an idiot for turning down the $500 - $600 offers, you were an idiot for trying to sell it in the first place"....that sounds very harsh and I don't mean to be, but that's my gut feeling.
Your Dad was being very generous trying to provide P-95s for him and you. Sounds like he likes you as a shooting buddy. That's great. But you didn't want to get rid of the 19 (I'd feel the same way) and I think your Dad will be be touched that you thought enough of it to want to keep it.
I have to say also, that I don't think I'd ever see a gun like the 19 you described around here for $600 or less.

No kidding! I was buying a 686 every month for around $400 in those days. LOL
