Model 17-2 grips
What would have been the issue grips on a 1966 vintage 17-2, The used one I just picked up has target grips which fit well, but I thought revolvers at that point in time were still wearing magna grips or did target models like the K22 get target grips?

Most likely Magna stocks are original to your 17-2. Magna stocks were often replaced with target stocks.

Most Model 17's came from the factory with magna grips unless special ordered with targets. I've owned several over time and they all were wearing magnas when I bought them and then I changed them out to target grips.

Look for the uncheckered diamond around the stock screw.

Have you absolutely established its shipping date as 1966?
Thing about the dash 2 Magnas of that vintage is they came with diamonds up to a certain point and then they didnt.
Case in point, I have two 18-2's with original Magnas fairly close in serial from about 66/67 , one has diamonds where the other does not.
If its important to you for the grips to be correct style perhaps you should post the partial serial first to compare.
Best of luck either way.

According to Supica/Nahas the gun was 66 manufacture. The ser# is K667xxx. The grips are the third type of Diamond center target grips with the extractor relief cut and the smaller area of checkering coverage, as shown on page 23 of the Standard Catalog of S&W third edition.

they could be original but unless the gun has TT/TH or just TH, then i bet they are add-ons.
