Default .41 Mag Ammo

I've got a Model 58 that is a .41 magnum that came with a box of ammo that says 41 Rem Mag 175 Gr. Silvertip. Is this the correct ammo for this revolver?

Yessir. That sounds like the right ammo

Pictures of the 58 are required just to make sure though

The Silvertip load will shoot high since the fixed sights are regulated for the 210 grain lead semiwadcutter load made by Remington and Winchester.

Low, I think; lighter bullet, lower recoil, etc.

Congrats on the Model 58! As long as we're on the subject, just what load were the sights on the 58 designed for? Do they actually hit close to POA with any factory ammo?

That Winchester 175 grain Silver Tip ammunition is some of the finest ammunition ever produced for the .41 Magnum. I carried it as my duty ammunition for most of the years I carried my 6" Model 57 as my duty firearm.

In our tests it performed admirably in all test mediums. It didn't do that well on deep penetration on hard objects, such as solid timbers, etc., but is excellent ammunition in all other regards. In fact, Winchester still produces it after all these years, it's that good.

Hope this helps.

Fred

Hey, Fred, is it your impression from the test results that it would be a good hunting round? I ask because the box states that it's for "Thin Skinned Game such as Whitetail Deer and Boar".

Thanks.

Default My Rule of Thumb...

Despite what the Winchester site claims, Silvertip hollow points are for two-legged critters, and Platinumtip hollowpoints are for four-legged critters....unless of course, your rolling your own!

Hope this helps.

I really wouldn't recommend the Silver Tip as a hunting round, but it's an excellent defense/duty round. For hunting, I'd want something with a tougher jacket and more weight. While I've never hunted with my Model 57, I do on occasion carry it when walking the dogs behind our house, since we live in a bear playground. I carry some of my 210 gr. cast SWC bullets, loaded for bear........

Hope this helps.

Thumbs up

Yeah, I do have some hard casts, but was wondering about these. They are what's in the cylinders and speed loaders right now for SD.

Thanks.

Man of Steel, I believe you are well armed with both side arm and load.
As a point of interest, I function tested my new Model 58-1 with a cylinder full of 175 g. Silvertips double action at seven yards. The point-of-impact coincided with the point-of-aim (or
POA=POI). This is about all I could ask for in a defensive
revolver and factory load combination.

I noticed at Cabela's that Hornady is now making 41 mag ammo with the 210 gr xtp. I think the Winchester 240 Platinum tip would be a good factory hunting load. at 25 yards 5 shots was basically one hole from a TC 14 inch
