My chop shop model 10
Took a GunBroker hag, 10-6, heavy barrel and had my local smith put a two incher on it (also off GB), bob the hammer and make it DAO.
Total investment was ~$410, not counting the JM grips.
What do all you'all think?

I think I would have just bought a 2" M&P.
But maybe I'm kooky?

My personal taste is such that I don't care for the heavy barrel , so my eye says "improvement". It's great the you went thru the trouble to procure a 2" barrel rather than having the original chopped. I am no fan of bobbed hammers , but you made a valid personal choice. Did you have it mechanically da only modified , or just the bob job?
The really good thing is - with all that modification you must have a strong sense of "my gun". That bis a good feeling.
Bottom like - if given the ownership choice between the 4" heavy barrel m.10 and your modified 2"er , I'd take the snub.

I've always wondered what a 2" Heavy Barrel would look like -- maybe the junkyard dog?

I have a 2” pre 10 with S&W sq combats, pretty similar to yours, and it sure does have the “right” feel to it.

I've been thinking of chopping the barrel on my beater 4" 10-10 round-butt to about 2.5". But I have a loose 2" blued barrel I picked up with a bunch of parts a few years ago.... maybe I should copy your idea?!?!?
If you're open to suggestions, those JM grips would look awfully nice if they were cut to the length of the fame, or maybe a bit more... another thing I've been contemplating for a couple K round-butts in the safe.
Enjoy your new 10!

I like it too. While I prefer longer barrels for shooting, the short ones are certainly easier to carry as a CCW. They really do shoot well if one does his part.

Yes, it's now DAO, which is my strong preference. I shoot DAO all the, regardless of the target or game, and have several DAO deer, groundhogs and squirrels to my credit with other S&W's. No fox, or bear ..... yet!
This one, however will probably only be fielded in suburbia.

Yeah. I love JM grips, but I'm not sure those will stay on that gun. Unless perhaps if I could shorten them a bit......
But they are a far cry from the ugly pacmyrers that came on it!!!!

It's your revolver to do with as you wish. For what's it's worth I like it. Neat little revolver for not a lot of money.

Givinchy gown and a NASCAR race... both desirable but probably not together. Nice grips, but I’m not sure they fit into the overall concept of your carry piece. If the gun already has a round grip frame, I would look at reducing the size of the grips, if square I would either have it “round butted” or at least look for the smallest SB style grips that I could still hold comfortably when shooting. All of that being said, “you can’t please everyone, so you’ve got to please yourself” according to the philosopher Ricky Nelson. I really hope you will be happy with your project as that is what is really important.

Not sure that 2" model 10s are available for $410, seems like a good idea. Who changed the barrel?

Try a set of factory magnas and a grip adapter.
Compact and comfortable.

Yes, exactly - and then if I did pony up for a good 2", I would have been loath to tune it DAO. But a 4 inch run-of-the-mill gun - hack away.
Randy Hollowbush at The Handgunner Shop in Topton, PA did the work. AND, his charge was, quite frankly, dirt cheap as these things go!! I brought him the gun, the barrel, and a 2 " ejector rod from Brownells. His backlog is huge and when I brought it in, I also had with me a model 19 that needed some action work. Together , they took a year to get back! But the total charge for all the work was like $178

The grips make the gun much too large for any use I might have for the gun.
For the price, it’s a great example of a tailor made firearm built to owner specs.

I have several 4" 10's and like them a lot, I do prefer the taper barreled one most. I also have a 2" 10 and like it a lot, so the barrel job isn't a problem. Don't know anything about the grips, so I have no opinion on them.
As for a DAO revolver, no thank you. But to each their own.

I like what you did, I'm a big fan of DAO and bobbed hammers, but the grips do seems a little large. Maybe Magnas & a grip adapter.

Eagle Grips?
Shopping for different, shorter grips. Since I'm not a fan of the old S&W grips that originally came with the gun, as I do not care for any grip that gets allot wider as towards the bottom and hence my JM preference for larger revolvers, I came across Eagle Grips' Secret Service Series.
Anyone here use them?

Travis Strahan- north GA... he was a prominent 1911 Smith in the 60s-70s in the South. Specialized in adding to the front of a 1911 barrel a section that matched the slide. Back then, GA highway patrol carried 4” model 65s in their belt... the chopped and channeled version was for their back pocket. He was old when he did this one...

I have a ebony set on a 442... very similar to Craig Speigal (sp?) boot grip. They do not extend past the metal bottom of the grip frame... I liked them.

I would just take my Harbor Freight belt sander, lay it on it's back and cut those grips down to something more reasonable. I do this to most of the grips I have. I have even shortened stupid Hogue grips.

Travis Strahan - Wow!! I met him back around 1999. Was living in Chattanooga at the time. He created a partridge style front post for my very first 44 mag - a Ruger Redhawk. What a talker!! When you went to his shop, you pretty much have to budget 1/2 just for talking. Super nice fellow!! Is he still kicking?

I made (modified) my own stocks for my 10-5 RB. They started out as Herrett SB checkered. Cutting, shaping, & sanding took place, and then refinishing. I am quite happy with the results. Bob
